So I will apologize now for just skimming the previous posts. I shot a 24" barreled 7mm for 20 years and just retired her for a 300 win mag(didn't want to cheat on the old gal). I needed an all weather rifle for Idaho, and the old blued wood needed a lot of attention in the rainy snowy north half I have hunted in the last few years. Sorry for the rant there, but may I suggest a plain old 280? Or perhaps the old school 30 06? I am only suggesting these because of two reasons:
a) they will both accomplish your goal with authority.
b) the ammunition can be found on any shelf almost anywhere(even if they have to blow the dust off the box they had in the back for 20 years). That actually happened to my oldest son last year with the 280.
He has dumped two elk with his Winchester 280 featherweight in Idaho. One at less than 100 yards, and the other at 394 yards.
My brother has harvested three elk with his 30 06 out to just shy of the 400 mark. Happy shopping!

I'm another fan of the 280. Been shooting a Remington 700 .280 since I got it new in 2002. Elk at 291, antelope at 309, and countless other whitetails and several other elk and antelope inbetween. If it takes more than one shot, it was my fault.
