New to this site and new to chasing big game out west. Went Elk hunting with a good friend in CO, who does some guiding, 2 years ago and I was just mesmerized...I would classify myself as a diehard bowhunter and chase deer and turkey back home. Very intrigued with the mountains and learning new ways to hunt and grow. I wasn't able to harvest an animal a couple years ago, but some of the most awesome encounters I've ever had. Would of been back this past fall but my wife gave birth to our first, a little baby boy.

With all this being said, I really have no idea how to start researching good units in all the western states and how to manage putting in all the applications. It's not my intention to offend anyone by making this statement, but I'm not opposed to going through reputable guides on all if not most all of the hunts. I only have so many weeks of vaca every year and to travel those distances, time, effort, resources already spent, again I'm not opposed to putting in extra hrs to pay a guide to help in the process. I would like to put in for Elk, and Mule deer. I know this is a very broad question, but if any insight could be shared to point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. I've just been researching the state DNR sites and keeping logs of good units, guides, probability of getting drawn, etc. Just wasn't sure if there is an easier way to do this and keep it all organized and managed.

Thanks again and look forward to future communications with many of you.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new baby boy! I think you are on the right track. It can be very intimidating looking at all the different stats and opportunities. In my opinion, I would try and narrow down the couple of states that may be the most conducive to your situation. From there you may want to determine what regions within those states you may want to hunt. Through DNR websites, outfitters, and the great folks on this forum you can begin to hammer out the details of the specifics of each area. Best of luck and hope I can help. Again welcome! What part of Kansas are you in?

Welcome aboard and congrats on your boy. If you stick around here you should be able to learn about anything you need. Great knowledgeable folks here. This old dog has learned some great new tricks in the short time I have been here.

Welcome, you should be able to get all information you need right here on this site. Asking questions on this site will get you normally very good info. Like was mentioned before I would definitely subscribe to Eastman's Hunting Journal.

I agree, it is a little daunting trying to figure out where to start. I am also a diehard bowhunter, but not necessarily a trophy hunter. That's why I like drop camps in otc areas. You should check some out, they might just fit your style. Welcome to a great forum with a great group of people.

Thanks for all the welcoming wishes. Really cool to see this. I'm located in eastern ks, closest city anybody has probably heard of is Manhattan. I for sure want to subscribe to the journal, and was thinking about just doing the digital version. Most of my research is done on the computer as is. What are thoughts on the digital, or is it best to stay with the print versions? Last question, at least for tonight..I'm primarily interested in bowhunting, so is it best to just subscribe to the EBJ, or am I missing info by not subscribing to the EHJ? Thanks again its very much appreciated.

I have the digital to both journals so I can get all the MRS info. I can't compare them to the print versions cause I don't get them but I think read on here somewhere that the digital MRS might have more pages than the print version.
