I believe 6.5x284 is built on a long action, just in case you weren't aware of that, since you mentioned sheep rifle and the .270wsm, thought I'd mention that.
the 2 sheep rifles I had in mind were a ultralight in .270win probably and a light in .300wsm for sheep in grizz country.

I personally hunt with a Savage 111 in .270winchester. Great flat shooting cartridge. Flexible bullets to run through it from 90grn to 160grn... I have taken 3 elk and 4 mule deer with this rifle sending Nosler accubond 140 bullets at all seven mentioned.. would be a great cartridge for you Muleywannabe and what you want to hunt..
