Picked up some paper regs at Walmart yesterday in Caldwell. Sportsmans warehouse didn't have them yet in Nampa but they are out

I'm trying to figure out how to read the ID regs, and am getting the hang of it (I think) in large but where are the OTC cow hunts?

Hmm it didn't copy right. Go to the web page. Click on hunting then big game then elk general. Layout of controlled and general tags are not on same page together. Look for general elk. There are a tags and b tags. It explains what tag is good for what.

I've looked over those a lot. Are the OTC cow tags just the fact that many of the A and B tags are any elk for some zones on or within 1 mile of private land (mostly)? I was thinking like Montana B tags but OTC. Didn't know those tags weren't any elk in the previous regs.

Many zones have OTC antlerless opportunities, some with rifle others with muzzleloader. I am guessing the "we got our OTC antlerless hunt back" was in reference to the panhandle zones which have historically had very liberal elk harvest but were scaled back several years ago

That is my question. It looks like in the panhandle, antlerless are only allowed to be taken within one mile of private land, not just anywhere during a particular hunt on an A or B.

Without knowing where Tim hunts I have no idea which zone he is referring too, I just assumed panhandle since that is the zone I know historically had OTC antlerless hunts to "get back"

for many years the panhandle had a 5 day any elk season in the middle of the general anterled bull elk season. this went away about 4-5 years ago, and just came back. so, no they are not just for cows, but are the any elk season. the panhandle has 3 days on the b tag any weapon season. i hope this make sense.

Yes 10/15-17 is any elk on the B in the panhandle and the A tag has time in September (archery) and December (MZL) for antlerless but always within 1 mile of private* land.

I will find out if the 1 mile is as the crow flies, or not.
You will find more elk closer to the wildland urban interface, than you will in the wilderness.
