Hi guys, I was drawn for New Mexico's unit 36 muzzy hunt. I have never been there before and plan on putting boots to the ground a few days before the Oct. opening. :confused:I understand there was a big fire a couple years ago in that unit? I was wondering if anyone who had past experiences would feel ok to share some insight as to what drainages I should concentrate on. Many thanks ahead of time. I totally understand what kind of effort it takes to gain experience in these draw areas and really appreciate your advice.:D thanks again.

ROUGH COUNTRY! Being a flatlander like myself you will want to be in the best shape possible because this unit has some of the deepest canyons in the country. Huge elk and plenty of em if your prepared for a hunt that will take you to hell and back but could reward you with a heavenly bull. Congrats!

opssup, Im not sure if your interested but I drew a 36 early archery tag and since the odds of me ever drawing again are so slim I got no problem passing on what I learn this September to you. Probablly be more of what not to do, but will be info for you. Be advised this will be my first elk hunt ever so the deck is stacked against me but the offer is there for you. Lol I have spent my refund on somthing else cause I never considered drawing and now get to change my plans for this.

Boy you drew a nice tag for your first elk hunt! Ive been applying for 36 for several years and no dice. I think nmdgf only wants me to hunt the north part of the state because they wont give me a southern unit tag. Congrats on a great tag but you better be ready for rough country and awesome lightening storms

Thanks, I've been putting in for 4-5 years on the same unit/hunts on a recommendation from a friend, I never really did much research cause I figured I'd never draw given my history with playing the odds. After the shock of learning I drew a tag, my first search for info netted me a 2007 article from mark Sullivan in outdoor life labeled "hell and back", lol. What have I got myself into???? Next I learn about this area getting burned pretty bad a year or so ago. Silver lining for me is this is undoubtedly the closest elk country for me so it's going to be a much easier solo trip for the given drive. Time will tell.

Hi TH55, thanks for the info in advance...I was thinking there might be an issue with early scouting since such a large burn may have reduced the huntable area and my hunt is third down the line, that they may be pushed(the elk) to different areas then I may see them in august...which is why I was looking for any experiences from the last season or two... I agree with swampokie...being top physical shape will have a major influence on your hunt experience.. but if you have the desire.. its going to be a Blast!!! Let me know if there is a way I can help you.

I was concerned about the burn myself but a guy I work with that is a hard core elk guy was pretty excited for me and seemed to think the timing is about right for after the burn. For me Im not so sure cause it looked like a really large area.
Im planning to make a run over there very soon to do a gear test and get a taste of the trerrain other than on GE.

I got drawn via the outfitter pool and will pick there brains about the elk as a whole for the seasons/patterns. I almost put in for muzzy but my schedule jacks me up during that season so I cant get off.

***So if you got drawn by going through the outfitter pool how are you doing this hunt in 36 by yourself? Are you taking advantage of that deal where you can get away with only having them with you for two days that many people don't like?

Don't let burns discourage you. A lot of elk are shot out of them. They produce a lot of minerals that elk like.

Hi hvfd21walker, I'm hoping that that is a true statement...and the burn is a true magnet from all sides of it...that will have the elk dispersed so everyone will not be hunting on top of each other. The only thing better would be to have just enough growth that they would feel secure to linger in it longer after sunrise. Either way I feel lucky to have the tag to get a chance at them!

Really interested as well.

You (TH55) said that this was a solo hunt. Even a solo hunt in moderate terrain can become hell.
I think I would find a running mate on this hunt.
I love hunting by myself but I sure hate recovery without help.

The best info I could give a guy hunting 36 is ...HORSES !! If you are planning on hunting in the White Mountain Wilderness there's no flat ground there it is all steep canyons. The pics are from the year before the Big Bear fire and most of that beautiful country in the pics was burned. The elk are still there and they travel all through the unit.

Thanks for pics Brooks, that does look intimidating.....

-06 I’m not sure where you ran with idea of this being a pure solo hunt, I said I was going to go there soon to a solo run, do some camping, check out the terrain to see how I do with the elevation before just showing up blind in September. As someone that has never elk hunted before, I chose to go with the outfitter as a learning experience with teachers, this way would have help packing should I connect with an elk. Not knowing anyone in the area this was important to me especially given the warmer temps on the early hunts.

I am still going to research this and plan it as if I'm going solo and (hopefully) the guide(s) will look at my ideas an show me or tell me where I’m thinking right and wrong with my plans. The owner has been really encouraging and helpful so far, but Ive not really talked with him much since I started applying with him several years ago. I’ve never hired out help for hunting so I’m not sure what to expect. After asking around this guy did come recommended and I thought for my first hunt it would be worth the extra money and gamble. Time will tell and Ill post my opinion of them after the hunt.

I cant afford an fully guided hunt every year nor is it worth 2K$ extra just to increase my draw odds an extra 5-7% only to still not have a clue what Im doing. If Im going to cough up the extra money for that Im going to try to learn as much as possible in the process. I am contracted with him for the first 5 days and can do whatever after that, assuming I am still able to walk at that point. I can always add guides the days from day six to ten, but Ill just have to see how it all goes. One of my concerns is to have them just plop me down "here" on day one and I shoot some 1/2 tame bull thinking I’ve done something. What would I learn from that? He did encourage me that if that happened I was welcome to stay on with them and help others in camp which I thought was cool of him and plan to do just that should I tag early. Of course all of this is before the money changes hands and the drawing was done.

If my thought process/plan upsets you and "many other people" think I’m just taking advantage of the "deal", Im sorry, its just the nature of the game. It all comes down to money just about any way you slice it. I don’t like the fact folks can just plop down 2-10 grand on a landowner tag and bypass the draw every time, or maybe its just because I cant afford to do that. Come to think on it though, as much as I have spent on LE draws and gearing up to get ready to do an ek hunt over the last several years I might would have been money ahead to do just that, especially if I find this elk hunting aint for me.

All that said Ill still help anyone that needs any thing I might could help with concerning this hunt, even if its just, never again! or dont do this....

Best wishes.

I wish you the best of luck but 36 would be a bit too much to chew on my first elk hunt, outfitter or not!

Brooks, nice photos...beautiful country indeed. I would love to have horses, even if I just walked in beside them. But I don't. I'll have to get my two legs and tired old back charged up! It will be a good time no matter what happens!
