Just found out that I drew 2b in New Mexico. The hunt is the second season so it is the 25-29 of October. I would love to chat with anyone about this area. I'm from Utah and can help return the favor if they wish to hunt here.
Thanks. Anything is appreciated.

Hate to burst your bubble, but I've been in 2B 2 of the last 3 November rifle hunts on tags my buddy drew and the unit ain't what it's touted to be any more. There are just way too many tags being issued and with all the roads in the unit a lot of deer have been shot by road hunters, of which there are plenty. That's what I've read from every single person that has hunted it the last few years, but maybe you'll run into a good one. They have closed a lot of the roads now and maybe things will get back in the next few years, but we hunted as far off the roads as possible and just flat didn't see a buck to get excited about. My suggestion would be to pack in from a closed gate on Rosa Road and set up a camp as close to the lake as you can get. Then get up high and glass all day until you can't see!

Ya. I figured alot of this before I put in here. I'm just gonna get out and hike and glass. What are do u think my expectations should be on buck size? Score is just an idea. I go by how I like it. Shot distances? Maybe we can chat??

So. I just got back from New Mexico and I hunted 2b. Tough hunt... Any who are interested in shooting a good buck in the 2nd season don't put in. I hunted 7 days and only saw 2 that were 130 class. I was in the deep timber to surrounding the lake to hunting the jic fence to southern gas buggy end. Saw lots of "forkies" as they call them and met some awesome dudes that had hunted their for 15 yrs straight. Here's the problem. The hunt has been moved up a week or two from 2011 or so and the big boys don't come in from Colorado. That was to"give them a break". According to the fish biologist. The fish biologists tell me that it is one of the last units doing well in New Mexico... its not doing well.. All deer that reside in the unit are young. There are lots by the lake but again young. All New Mexico is doing is hunting the limited forkies they have an capitalizing on deer from Colorado. I found some great country but To many tags and nobody passes on a buck. The two 130 class bucks I saw were the biggest deer anybody had seen according to the fish biologist and forest cop. I can find more deer in the salt flats of Utah then they have in New Mexico. I love seeing the country so it's not a big deal. If anyone is interested in this hunt pm me and we can talk.

My family hunts unit two and has for decades. From what I have heard and seen it was a tough hunt all year long. It started with archery elk and deer and didn't get any better to finish out the year. My uncle and his buddies found some good deer this year, but he said it was nowhere near what it usually is. He wasn't sure if the numbers were down or if they were just hiding better this year due to the warmer temps. Either way I hear it was a tough hunt all around and have heard several stories like yours. Thanks for the feedback and keep your head up! I struck out with archery elk this year in unit 2, but I'm heading back next year if I can draw because I had an absolute blast
