Greetings everyone. My name is Mike and I live in NW Wisconsin. My wife and I enjoy most anything outdoors, although the last few years my hunting and fishing time has taken a serious hit due to adding 3 boys to our family, one now 3 and 1 yr old twins. Before the boys came we were on bow stands for whitetail dozens of times each fall, walking trails with our 2 Griffons for ruffed grouse or jumping beaver ponds for woodies and occasionally bonus mallards, plus I made 5 trips to NM elk hunting (5 bulls, all 5x5 and 6x6 :D ) So wife just got approved last week for a leave of absence for a year which affords me a chance to head west this fall (2015). Too late now to apply and plan a big elk trip, plus I'm planning to make this a solo trip, so thought I'd see if maybe a mullie trip somewhere could work out. Before I was around (I'm 52) my dad made many trips hunting mullies around Ten Sleep WY. I still recall the stories he told about those trips while we were at deer camp or on a fishing trip and love going through those old B&W photos of those trips. So now I'm thinking of retracing his footsteps 50+ years later and make a trip out there myself. He passed 23 years ago so I haven't much to go on for planning this trip, that's why I joined to read of others experiences and hopefully find some that would be gracious enough to share information about where, who, etc. I've spent a couple days reading other posts, and going through the WGFW site (confusing!) and maybe,....I'm more confused now!!! Ha. Would appreciate any information or direction anyone is willing to provide. Cheers!

Thanks mnhoundman and NDHunter. Wow, I've got some work to do in a short few days. So I see region Y is on the east side of the bighorns. Do I need to pick a unit in region Y or can I simply pick Y and hunt any or all, units 24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33, 168, and 169? If by region, then I did a quick review of each of these units and see a low success rate in 25 and 28 but lots of public land. Then looking at 30 and 33 a much higher success, but lots less public. I suppose most of that success is coming from the private lands, which I'm sure I would not have any access to, meaning any public land would/could be quite crowded. Does this make sense and then mean I'd be better off doing units with high public lands? Or what if I had a good GPS like I've read in some other posts that gives me good definition between public and private? Could hunting the edges of the private lands then give me a good opportunity? Looks like unit 30 offers about 40% public with nearly 62% success, but 861 hunters. While 30 offers about 33% public with 71% success, and half the hunters at 427. Am I looking at this the right way? Not sure if either of you have been in region Y but I see unit 24 has only 10.7% public, 49% success but 1502 hunters. What makes that so popular with only ~11% public?

I have never been to y. Done a little research on it and have heard there is more deer the further south you go from the big horns. There is more private land once you get lower on the mountain in the foothills. I've heard it is pretty crowded around there, but some nice bucks around to. I talked to a warden and he said if they get any weather at all they move down pretty quickly, so maybe south farther would be better unless we have a call like last year.
