Hey guys, my name is Daniel and I'm a native to Colorado. Avid big game hunter focusing on Mule Deer, Antelope and Elk (haven't had the opportunity to draw Moose yet). I am 30 years old and reside in the Denver Metro area, but have a place on Twin Lakes as well.

Typically focus my Deer and Elk Hunts in area 48 and 49, Antelope in 8 and 112, and hope to draw a Moose tag eventually in 8 as well.

Switching it up this year (because I didn't draw for 49), and doing Muley hunting in 27/181. Not too familiar with the area, but plan to get up there soon to scout it out. Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of good information on this forum with some extremely knowledgeable hunters. Look forward to keeping in touch with fellow hunters and learning new tricks.

Cheers!

Not sure which season you're going. Neither unit has high success rates on bucks. The success in 27 last year ran around 17% on bucks in both 2nd and 3rd season, while in 181, 2nd season ran about that level but 3rd season success was actually under 10% on bucks.

Kind of surprising because the BLM in the south of 181 is listed as concentrated winter range that you would think the deer would be starting to move toward during November.

Unit 27 has very little winter range. Their winter concentration is south of the unit and the CPW Hunt Atlas shows them migrating north to south the whole length of the unit. Unit 181 also has north to south migration but the winter concentration is on that BLM within the unit.

So, where you see those deer this summer may not be where you see them come late October and November. You should talk to the local CPW biologist about that.

Thanks for the info hoshour. We will definitely give it our all and hope for the best. I think we plan to focus our time in 181 mostly so worst case scenario is we get a good work out from hiking around!

There are worse things than being outdoors for a good hike! Be sure you spend a good amount of time with your binos and spotting scope.

If you're not already using them, the CPW Hunt Atlas and Google Earth can help pinpoint some potential sites to glass from and you can confirm them with an on-site visit, though like I said, the migration route in that unit is about 20 miles long and that means you may have to keep going until you find the deer, especially if it is 3rd season. You'll also share it with 300-400 other guys, though most of them will be on the roads or close to them.
