After losing my Lab Molly last June, my wife and I were undecided about another dog. Molly was 13 1/2 when I had to put her down and it was really hard. She was a great hunter (a pointing Lab) and friend.

Well we pulled the trigger yesterday and bought a puppy from Eichhorn Kennels in Calhan, Co. The litter was just whelped and as we were first with our deposit, get pick of the litter. This breeder specializes in pointing Labs, so I am really looking forward to picking out our puppy the first week of June. We want another black female.

I'll be training her myself. Have trained several other dogs and have a great place to do it. Nice 2 acre pond and lots of pasture to do the starting field work.

Look forward to doing some pheasant hunting in eastern Colorado, so if any of you know of someone to contact let me know.

I have had labs most of my life. It hurts so bad to lose them but the upside is so good I can't live without one. We have a new puppy scheduled for this summer... will be my first white lab. Congrats on the new puppy! If you ever want some Nebraska bird hunting, give me a call. It isn't amazing hunting but you can get a limit every day if you work at it.

I too have a pointing lab that is 4 now. Those pointing lines are some very instinctive hunters, almost to a fault. Since you'll be getting a pup I'll share a funny story.

He was about four months old and I was into some obedience training with him and I had bought Julie Knutson's book on training these labs. I'd read that book a little every night before bed while the pup stared at me wanting me to play some more. Well one day I came home from work to find that book pulled off of my night stand and laying in the middle of the living room floor a midst a pile of confetti that the day prior was attached to the book. The hardbound cover had about a 4" hole chewed through it like a pack rat. Needless to say, I was not very impressed with the situation but one had to laugh at the irony. I guess Cooper didn't like that style of training.

As much of a pain in the butt this particular dog was as an adolescent, he turned into the best hunting dog I've ever had. Watching their transformation from being little pricks to a polished hunting machine has always amazed me.

Heading out early Friday am for Colorado Springs. We pick up our new pup on Sat am, already named her Jenny. Official AKC registered name will be Wing Music Jenny of Eichhorn, kennel name has to be in registered name per our agreement with them. I'll post some pictures next week.

Congrats on the new pup! My wife has been working me over pretty hard for a white lab pup.

I'm not sure I'm good enough to control two of those beasts on a hunt at the same time! but, I do love hunting over a good dog.

Is it duck season yet?

Jason,

You can buy and release pheasant fairly cheap. Adult birds are a little more but if you buy chicks they are very reasonable. (check your states laws) I lived in southern Texas for a while and a local guy raised and released a flock every year so we all had birds to hunt. There is a guy close to me that raises birds if you need help. Let me know.
