Need Northern California hunters' input for a research study

Hi everyone,

I'm a researcher doing a study on Northern California hunting--specifically, hunter preferences for how restored areas that are turned into wildlife areas should be managed for hunting.

If you hunted deer, waterfowl, turkey, or other upland gamebirds in the SF Bay-Delta or Sacramento Valley in 2019-20, you might have run into my survey crew asking about that day's hunt.

We're now following up this work with an online survey. If you'd like to have your views represented, check out the links below. We'll be sharing our results with with CDFW and USFWS so that this info gets to the decision-makers. You can expect questions about where you've hunted; your hunt success and satisfaction; hunt regulations and the future of hunting; and preferences for management approaches to crowding, access, and habitat quality.

Eligibility criteria for the survey are:
  • You must be 18 or over
  • You must have hunted public land in northern California at least once since the 2019 season
  • You must hunt deer, waterfowl, turkey, or other upland gamebirds

The survey is completely confidential and operates under a strict human-subjects research protocol to preserve personal information. The only personally identifying information we collect is from people who want to claim the incentive payment of $20 that we offer to survey respondents. For that, you will need to give a name and address so I can mail you the 20 bucks. If you prefer to remain anonymous, there's an alternate version with the same set of questions that does not collect any personal info at all.

Here are the links:

if you don't care about the $20 but you want to stay anonymous

Thanks for considering it. I'm happy to answer questions downthread if anyone wants to ask.

Think I can help narrow you search, there no deer or pheasants left in this state to hunt.
Yeah, if you get a pheasant after opening day you must be some kind of prodigy.

But , to your larger point, our survey asks about stuff like this--where and what you've harvested, what you think the causes of population declines are, what you prefer in terms of new access to public hunt sites/ hunt regulations/etc. So, if you've got things to say on that topic, have at it.

Hi everyone, we're going to keep the survey open for a couple more weeks, and then we'll start doing the data analysis.

So, if you haven't taken the survey yet and you'd like to have your voice heard, now's the time. Or forward the links to those hunters that you know who would be eligible (18+, hunted public lands in N. Calif in last 2 years).

Thanks so much!

bit.ly/HunterResearch20 for people who want to collect the $20 payment

bit.ly/HunterResearch for people who prefer to remain completely anonymous

(I probably don't need to say this, but please don't do the survey more than once!)

Last chance for the survey if you want to collect payment. I need to process the final payments before the end of the fiscal year. The anonymous, no-$20 link will stay up a little while longer.

Thanks for all the responses from those on this forum--I appreciate it!
