Thanks to all who commented and congratulated me. I am indeed humbled by your kindness. Yes Bcon .... it is still once in a lifetime for bull elk....I don't think non residents are allowed to apply in the general draw... however landowner non residents can apply. And cows are every 5 years... again residents only. And the sheep I think are once in a lifetime... will ask and find out for sure.. Residents only for the sheep draw. My son will be putting in for sure now.... but dad will have to pay for him... LOL!!!!

Yep, you are right. Residents only! Lived there most of my life, then moved to one of the only states with FEWER Big Game Opportunities! I have a bunch of friends that travel to hunt elk etc… but don't put in for the Nebraska tag! What a great opportunity in a great location. Very jealous!

Congratulations on a fine ram. I formerly live in Nebraska and always applied for the sheep drawing when they allowed a hunt. It was $25 to apply back then; maybe's changed now? I know that if you were the lucky hunter that they provided a guide and horses and even lodging, I think at Ft. Robinson. What I never found out though was, what was the cost of the sheep tag....not counting the $25 lottery fee? Could you inform us?

To answer your questions track2 the resident only lottery cost a nonrefundable $25. Whoever wins it does get 4 nites lodging (a very nice former officer quarters at Fort Robinson) and 4 days for the winner and a buddy (I took my son)...... also all the meals are provided in those 4 days. The cook there was the best.... meals were super good..... even the sack lunch that she prepared for us to have during our day hunts. The G & P biologist that works with the sheep was my guide. Also the biologist's 2 assistants helped look for the ram they wanted me to take. No horses .... just trucks. And they helped me get the sheep to the truck... to the check-in station...and even helped me take it to the taxidermist. All for the cost of the drawing.... just $25. The biologist and his assistants have a real passion for the sheep.... I could tell they really love the wildlife they work with and have a general love of the outdoors. Super nice and courteous and well mannered........ I really appreciated that. My son and I had a first rate experience. Hats off to the Nebraska G & P !!!!!

Did you get to look over any of the other herds in Nebraska?

There is a 1 eyed ram over at Chadron St Park that is really nice and has lots of character. There are also some bigger Canadian sheep over North of Harrison but I dont think any of them are older then about 7-8.

Congrats on the hunt.

Hey Okielite.... we did not check out the other herds other then the rams at Fort Robinson. However I have seen some pictures of some younger rams taken this spring in the areas where the sheep are and there is one ram that really sticks out. His horns are curling just like they should but the spiral is really wide when viewed from the front. Way wider and more open spiral than most rocky mountain bighorn sheep. I am no expert but this ram looks more like the sheep that I seen Jim Shocky (misspelled ?) hunt overseas..... Marco Polo sheep if I remember right. I am going to e-mail the G & P sheep biologist and see if he wants to comment on this ram. The sheep are really getting spread out up there in the Panhandle..... hope that pneumonia does not take a bunch out in the next few years!!
