After a long 15 hr drive, we arrived at our destination at 1am on Oct. 1st. We got everything ready to go in the morning to begin the first evening I'd hunt for my Idaho Shira's Moose. I did not have the time off work to go scouting but I made this trip a long one of 14 days. We spent the first evening in the UTV getting a feel for the area to see where we would like to spend some time on our feet. We hiked miles and miles and saw zero sign of moose. On the 4th, I met a guy named Harold that was out just looking for moose and he didn't even with a tag. He gave me some pointers on where to look and we finally found some but very little sign. On our way back to the cabin on the 5th, from the highway my girlfriend spotted a goofy looking little moose on an island right in the middle of the Snake. Without a boat, hunting that island is impossible, so I contacted the friend I met to see if he had or knew anyone with a boat. He couldn't turn up anyone with a boat, but he wanted to see the area and we could maybe call one over to a spot that I could make a play on it. While headed over there we spotting a moose that was decent and he spotted the bigger one couple hundred yards up the river. As we were trying to locate the moose near where we saw it last. I took a break from the glass and was watching a guy fly fish to my right, when right behind him 150 yards, I saw the moose crossing the river to an area where I could shoot! then the race was on. My mother happened to come on this evening hunt and she took the picture of the moose crossing the river as I took off running! I grabbed my bow and my 300, we cut the moose off when he reached the other side, Harold started calling at him. The Moose was pissed. I chose to use my rifle instead of the bow because of the river being so swift and deep that if he didn't drop quick I might lose him in the river. He came in the trail I was on, he turned sideways and I squeezed off the 300 at 4 yards. He came running up the trail towards me, so I stepped to my left and the moose went right. he went 40ish yards and started getting the wobbles. Best part was my girlfriend, mom, and dad were right there to experience it with me! the second best part was I could pull the truck right up to the base of the hill and load him whole in the truck!
