Some years back,i have rode into areas on a dirt bike,Biggest problem is and was scent control,2 stroke bikes stink and you end up smelling like gas/oil mixture, even 4 strokers have a gas smell and exaust smell.

I had the same bike in the second link for quite a few years. It's a Kawasaki KLR 650. Awesome bike on the street and dirt, but I would never take it down a rough/steep dirt road with anything more than myself on it. It's a very tall bike and slips out from under you pretty easy. Something low, powerful and has a lot of traction is what you want.

The problem with bikes is the weight sits up too high when it's strapped on. The second problem, out west anyway, is they are illegal to use off road or off designated trails in virtually every state out here. Go tooling out thru the brush and someone finds it, you might be pushing it back to town. There are quite a few trails where the width limit is 48" and there, they would be great, but again, loaded up with an Elk they get real tipsy till you get up to speed. They're not worth a dam loaded up and crawling along.
