I believe it was Bitterroot Bull that said he got about 600 lbs of meat off of his Alaskan moose. Any idea how much you put in the freezer out of yours? Or, how big are they when compared to a bull elk?

600 lbs is a ton of meat! Alaskan moose are bigger than Shiras though. If I remember right, my Shiras bull moose meat quartered and in game bags weighed somewhere around 330 lbs. Interested to see how much timo got. I've seen big bull elk that had as much meat as my moose.

Put about 320 lbs of meat in freezer after trimming it out. I was told to by the biologist and couple other people they are about 30% bigger than an elk. That seemed about right from what saw. Carrying it out through a willow bog it seemed more like 600 lbs!

My son took a very large mature Shiras in 2014, hanging at the processor it weighted 667 lbs on their scale. We got over 400lbs boned out meat as I recall. It filled three large coolers once cut wrapped and frozen. About 30% larger than elk sounds about right. With the head, hide and guts, I bet it was well over 1,000lbs. We did not weigh all the parts, but 1,200lbs would be in the ball park I suspect. We saw several Moose, likely younger Bulls, that were much smaller. So just like elk the size will vary.

I've seen quite a few of the AK/Yukon variety that made this one look tiny, as in about 60% larger. I have a picture of his Shiras gutted and hoisted by a front end loader, just before we put him in a trailer, I just shake my head. They are big, the size of even an average Shiras Moose is huge.

MN, this may help visualize Shiras Moose size. My trailer was 4.5 'X 10.5'. I could not close the tail gate. This one is larger than average I'd guess, but was told they can get upwards of 1,400 lbs, which this one was under I am guessing.

Now that's the way to deal with a moose!

A rancher said if we got one he could easily get to, he'd load it. I was recovering from a major surgery and about 40%, so we were lucky to have the help. Otherwise we'd have had to break it down or get out the winch and come alongs. My oldest son only cares about the meat, so we hunted the ranch creek bottom close to ranch roads looking for one. Anyway, I think that view helps guys wanting to see how large they are get an idea.

2014 WY 3.5 year old shirus bull, hanging weight 476 lbs, yield boned out 300 lbs. 2 boned out AK/Yukon moose weighted at Lake Clark 950 LBS. Have harvested a couple of big bull elk, boned out the most was 250 lbs. When I walked up to my AK moose I thought, What the HELL was I thinking! That was 27 years ago, glad I was young and dumb!

Really enjoying the pictures! Was wondering how you got him into your Tacoma? I had a hard time just to roll mine over by myself after getting the first side boned out.

Well it was a feat to do it. My wife was a huge help. It took everything we had. Thank god I had a comealong. The best part of that hunt was my wife and 2 year old daughter was with me.
