Sitting on six points, reminds me of what Wyoming did years ago, trying to decide to bail out or stay. Decisions, decisions. Would like to see a point breakdown for nonresidents.

Is it just me or does that sound stupid?

We want improved odds, not worse, so whereas before you had to front $750 now it's $50-70?

I'm assuming odds are gonna get worse!?

I really would like to see Residents pay a fairer amount for these once in a lifetime type tags, and make everyone front the cash to apply! or at least offer a points only option.

I'm not sure what NM residents pay for sheep but I know as a non-res I have front over $3k to apply! imagine if residents had to front that!? What do you think the odds would be!?

oh well, pay to play...

at least I'm fairly young and have been applying for 7years?

What is going to destroy the odds is that residents only have to pay $10 to apply, and not front the tag fee. When Oregon made that change with the same low application fees, the number of applicants went up 3 to 4 times.

On the other hand non-residents have to pay $50 or five times as much for the "application fee" as a resident.

I am just chewing this over, and I don't think that "application fees" have that kind of difference in any other western state. Sure tag fees are different, and sometimes the preference point fees are different, but not the "application fee". I thought the idea behind an application fee was to cover the costs of you as an applicant.

I really wish Eastmans' would get behind this idea, even if it was just a "nudge" in the common sense direction, but perhaps this is too hot of a topic and don't want to offend any subscribers...?

I have the feeling they would simply say " move to a western state" which is great for when you're a res of that state! but not the other 9 states.

honestly a max multiplier of 10x, and ideally something in the 5-9x would be great.

app fees should be the same for everyone!
tag fees 5-10x multiplier (if not the same)
bonus pts should also be that in the 1-10x multiplier.

sheep-goat-moose- once in a lifetime tags should be the same for res and non res, esp when we're all in the same pools...

good luck I guess? haha.

Residents actually have to pay $80 to apply for those species. I have max points on Sheep but who knows if I will ever win the lottery. Got to put in to win.

Draw is open, you no longer have to submit the tag fee w/ your application, but they are now charging a $50 non-refundable fee per species as well as a $20 non-refundable bonus point fee per species to apply. Bottom line is it costs us way more to apply.
Well, now glad I made the decision not to get in the Montana point game when they started it. Was afraid it was just a ploy to get applicants invested in it before "setting the hook". Since I began investing in various state's hunting lotteries it has morphed into a business of who can profit the most off those hunters who will never draw a tag in their lifetimes, not just a method for selling/distributing actual big game tags.

Montana has now made my decision to ever get in their game a no brainer.......$70/species/year plus all the guys in front of me with squared points! That deal is even worse than WY's for any newbies starting from ground zero. You can bet MT will morph their rules yet again in the future when they see the decline in new applicants. How?.........by cheapening the points they sold previously. Sadly, most state's big game lotteries these days are in fact legalized Ponzi schemes.

Since I began buying points in 10 states in 1996, only two have not bait & switched by cheapening my points (Ponzi schemes).............Arizona & New Hampshire. That's it. The rest choose money over ethics.

I only have 3 bonus points for sheep in MT. So, I'm obviously a long ways from having any realistic chance of drawing.

$80 every year for who knows how many decades could get real spendy, real quick.

I'd much rather front the whole tag fee. Then I'd at least rack up some Cabela's points.

Yeah, if a guy took all his point/tag fees and saved them he'd at least be able to go on one nice hunt eventually. Montana is depressing...we NRs need a set quota and a seperate draw from the residents. How do we get that changed!

I have 4 points for sheep and 2 for goats. Not sure that I want to drop $150 each year for the likely guarantee that I'll never draw with such poor odds. MT just became as bad as WY, AZ, or ID in my book making you buy a $150+ hunting license before you apply. Maybe it's even worse, because for my $150, I don't even get a hunting license in MT!

The only thing that may keep me in the game is the relatively cheap tag fees if drawn. $750 is a bargain these days, but who knows how long that will last either.

Maybe I should just bail and use the $150 saved to re-sole my Kenetreks. That would just about pay for it!

I would say for the people that aren't greatly invested in it (top-point groups), it's a good time to get out. Too much money to front and virtually no odds at ever drawing a tag. With point squaring it's only going to get worse...it already has if you look at their complete breakdown of drawing stats...higher point holders are dominating the very few tags given out. In the not-to-distant future a 30 point holder will get 900 chances in the draw and they'll be thousands of those still in the system.

MT needs to make them once in a lifetime permits. I am a resident with max points and have never drawn any of the big 3. I have 2 close friends and know of several others that have drawn moose, sheep and goat multiple times after they sat out for the 7 year waiting period.
