I posted this in Montana but thought I would post it here as well. I drew an antelope region 7 tag. Any advice on what to expect as far as trophy potential would be greatly appreciated. I know Montana isn't known for its monster lopers but I'm not sure what to expect in this area of the state. I've spent a lot of time in Southwestern Montana but not much in the Southeastern part of the state. Any tips on areas to start looking would be great as well. I have a Wyoming antelope buck and doe tag as well so it looks like October is going to be spent chasing lopers!!! Feel free to PM me. Thank you for any help! Good luck to all this fall!

Is your wy tag good for the boarder country if that's the case I'd hunt the southtern border and be able to score in either state. Good critters if you get more than a 100 feet off the road.
My WY tags are for further south. I plan on hunting MT for a few days then down to WY for a few days. Should be a blast!

Antelope numbers are way down in SW MT the last few years. There have been some bad die off's that they have not recovered from yet. Im sure there are still some good bucks around but you will have to work harder to find them. On the bright side there are alot less tags and alot less hunters. Good Luck!

I would check for BMA areas and BLM land east of Miles city along Powder River, have seen some very nice antelope in this area. Also Between Baker and Ekalaka on Hwy 7. Alzada area down on Hwy 212. East of Roundup north of Hwy 12 there is some BLM. Took some mid 70's and an 80 there, but that was before the bad winters two to three years ago.

Biggest antelope I have ever seen on the hoof was along hwy 12 in a hay field not to far from the ND border! I had a 700 tag 6-8 years ago and did about the stupidest thing I have ever done. I hunted around Cohagen and the antelope were real spooky and every time I would find a buck and make a stalk he was over the next 3 hills. I got really frustrated with 1 of those does that always busts you and took a shot at her at somewhere over 500 yards expecting to miss but I somehow put her DRT. It was an either sex tag (wouldnt have shot if it wasnt) so I did the honorable thing and tagged my trophy doe and put her in the cooler

Also, I've heard most of the ranchers and farmers will let you on their place if you just ask but never witnessed this personally
We've hunted a couple ranches around Ekalaka with good animals. There's one we like about 20 miles south that has a bunkhouse for $25 a night per person, some bird hunting. Really nice folks.
I'd look at the Montana ACCESS program. I think the new directory comes out first of August so it should be ready.
Not sure when you hunted that area but last year while I was there deer hunting I only seen a handful of pronghorn. Cross over into SD and it looked like typical WY herds, weird.

I drove through some of region 7 on the interstate over the 4th of July and didn't see many antelope. The temps were in the 90's so they may have been bedded or near water, not sure.

The Montana hunting access guide is out. You can get a copy of it from FWP for free. Go to web site and order it. It has all the different regions with maps listing BMA's , types, acreage, and locations. There are a lot of pieces between Baker and Broadas. Also quite a few areas west of Glendive and north of Miles City. Don't know about lope numbers, but no shortage of hunting ground.

We hunted on foot out the south side of the ranch, took an hour or so. Only need one good one!
Butcher said he normally had 20 - 25 animals in by then, my brother's was only the third one in. There still aren't nearly as many tags as before the die off I guess.
I had a funny thing happen there while I was bird hunting on the ranch. I heard a huge engine roar and looked over my shoulder, there was a B1 bomber practicing low altitude maneuvers from a base in SD. The roar was this thing going into a full power climb from no more than a couple hundred feet off the deck. It was like a science fiction movie.
Rancher said it's pretty common, and they stuck one in the dirt a few years back. Everybody got out, one crew member with a broken leg.
