Anyone ever hunted with Chappell Guide Service? Thinking about using them for my late rifle elk hunt. Not sure which unit yet either 9 or 19A. He said they were confident in either unit. Seems like both are pretty tough during the late rifle hunt for different reasons so I think I'm going to go guided.

Loveland, CO. was AZ.
I've never used a guide here in Az for elk or deer. I do know the above mentioned guide service has been around a while with plenty of success. Never hunted unit 9 or 19a. However I have hunted and taken 1 bull elk,1 cow elk and a small mulie buck out of unit 10 over the years which borders to the south and west of HWY 64. Unit 9 is divided by HWY 64. Late rifle hunts can be tough in Az. I would probably do the guided thing also living no where near the state one would be hunting in. These GUIDES have many miles of scouting and hunts with their boots on. Go for it... Best of luck in which ever unit you have drew. Unit 9 has some beautiful country and holds some nice Bulls.

Thanks! Yea, I have heard the late hunts can be really tough. 9 being almost impossible to glass and 19A not having a big elk population is the main reason I think I will go guided. Somewhat poor research during the application process on my part. I wasn't expecting to draw this year and do not have any time to make a scouting trip either. I had to modify my CO application after AZ charged my CC. Really hoping I drew 9. I know there are some good bulls in there, even on the late hunt.

I used Chappell in 2013 for a successful late rifle hunt and was completely satisfied with them in all aspects. Steve runs a very professional outfit. Sending you a PM.

Thanks for the PM! I spoke with Steve on the phone yesterday and enjoyed our conversation. He answered nearly all of my questions without me having to ask. Glad to hear that your hunt with them was as advertised.

My first and only 2 calls for guides in AZ would be to A3 and Steve, so I think you are on the right track.

Did you guided on this hunt? How did it turn out? The unit(s) I'm looking at aren't the same as yours but I'm looking to go on a late hunt as well. I've seen some great success pictures and read some horror stories on the late hunts.

The late hunts in AZ are tougher than early rut tags, but compared to many other States, I wouldn't rate them nearly as difficult. There's wayyy less hunters than a general area in MT, WY, ID, CO, etc. and way better bull to cow ratio's. Way more mature bulls as well.

Good glass, hiking boots, and realizing that you aren't hunting an early rifle rut tag will get positive results. I think the biggest reason for failures on the AZ late hunts are people that don't understand how bull elk behave that time of year. The other is I think many arrive with unrealistic goals. Killing a solid 6 point that isn't busted up should be the goal.

I've hunted 2 different AZ areas on late hunts DIY (although with some good information from a friend there) and took 2 nice 6 points, the biggest of the 2 was 356 gross, and if unbroken would have been around 370.

As far as elk hunting goes, those hunts are not really all that tough, IMO.

Bama I apologize for the lengthy delay in my response but I did go guided and came home with a tag. I sent you a PM.
