While I'm 15+ years from retirement, I cannot see myself moving from Nebraska on retirement. All our family is here, and moving is just not something I see myself doing. Good waterfowl, turkey and deer hunting in NE, and I'm only 8-10 hours drive from mountains.

Good luck in your search!

I agree with you... pretty good balance imo. I have considered moving further west in Nebraska though.

I have lived in Laramie for 17 years now and I really like it.

The wind definitely has its moments for sure, but its not as bad as most make it out to be. We get snow, but we also get some really nice days in the winter.

I really like being close to great hunting and also some great fishing as well. The Medbow gets its share of use from Colorado, Nebraska, etc. but living here you can pick your times to recreate there. Right now SE Wyoming is an elk factory...I've never found elk hunting that's any better than here. Since moving to Laramie, I've killed 31 elk and by the end of this season, will likely be 33. Deer and pronghorn are great too.

Its also nice living in a college town, always have liked that. The college has a lot of stuff going on all the time and I really like being able to attend the college sporting events. Plus, despite what a lot of rednecks claim, there are some damn smart people that work at universities. I hunt elk each year with 3 guys that all worked and/or went to UW for advanced degrees(all are retired), 2 of the 3 have PhD's.

I like that its close enough to Cheyenne, Fort Collins, and Denver that I can drive to those places if I want to (more options for stores, etc.). I typically fly out or Denver, and while a pain in the ass, is doable and cheaper than flying out of Laramie.

There is also some great opportunities to hunt several other States within a days drive, some within a few hours... Montana, Nebraska, Kansas, Dakota's, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho all pretty close really.

Its not for everybody, but I really like it.

But how is the waterfowl hunting?
Waterfowl hunting in general will be best east of the front range no matter what state you are looking at. If you want to live in the mountains, you are going to deal with a shorter local season. Doesn't mean you can't kill birds but there won't be as many and they won't be there as long.

We have been here 17 years and there have been 2 that had a lot of snow. 2' to 3' at one time. Usually we get 3 or 4 inches that melt off before we get more. Lowest temp I know of during this time was about 5 degrees. Usually in the low 40's during the sunny days.
