I use these gaiters and have had zero issues with them. I used to use really cheap stuff, so these were a huge upgrade for me. I was skeptical about the velcro, but after using them for 2 years, I never have readjusted them. My lower legs don't get hot while wearing these either so I believe they breathe really well.

I just ordered a pair of gaiters last week for Colorado late season deer hunting. I did a few hours of research and found that the Outdoor Research Crocodiles are the "gold standard" when it comes to gaiters. I understand they have a lifetime warranty so it was a "buy once" decision. I found them on sale at backcountry.com:

http://www.backcountry.com/outdoor-research-crocodiles-gaiter-mens?CMP_SKU=ODR1087&MER=0406&skid=ODR1087-BK-XXL&CMP_ID=PLA_GOc001&mv_pc=r101&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=PLA&mr:trackingCode=79B320C8-0E97-E211-A87C-001B21A69EB8&mr:referralID=NA&mr:device=c&mr:adType=plaonline&gclid=CJnUsc3s0M8CFQ9Efgod3aYGXg&gclsrc=aw.ds

As far as the Kuiu, I love Kuiu's gear and own a pile of it. I liked a lot of what I read about the gaiters but read some mixed reviews about how well the fabric would hold up over years of use. None had worn them out but some were seeing the wear (newer product). Kuiu uses a stretch fabric. The big positive with the Kuiu was the fabric they used was a bit quieter.

The Outdoor Research are supposed to be the "gold standard" and very tough. They are made of 1000D Cordura nylon.

For me, the decision came down to either noise reduction (less with Kuiu) or better durability (better with Outdoor Research). I went with durability since the times I would likely be wearing them I'd be making noise anyways (busting through brush or hiking in snow).

With the lifetime warranty, I may even try wearing them working on our ranch when its wet out to keep water and sticks out of my boots.

From what I researched, between the Kuius and the ORs you are looking at two of the best.

Thanks for all your help! Umpqua Hunter, I see the sizing on he OR gaiters has some over lap between the size L and XL (10&11). I'm a 10.5 in shoe size so I need to decide on the size L or XL. By chance are you in that shoe range and if so what size did you order and how do they fit?
MY OR Crocodiles arrived today.

I wear a size 14 shoe and have VERY large calves, and so I went with the XXL. It is barely large enough through the calf. I haven't tried the fit with my boots yet.

From my reading, the most critical fit issue is the fit through the calf. My best "guess"...if you consider you have small/normal sized calves, go with the L and if larger calves go with the XL. I could not find any sizing charts based on calf size, only based on shoe size and the XXL was what was recommended for a 14 shoes size.

P.S. I was going to note from my research, some of the reviews I read said the Kuiu tended to run smaller in the calf. I have no experience with that, just noting what I read. Considering how the XXL barely fit me it was probably the right choice for me to go with the OR Crocodiles.

I agree with UH about the OR's. They have been the "gold standard" for a long time. I have been using them for years for many outdoor activities in the mountains during winter. Some of the others might be ok too, I've never used them.

My shoe size is 10.5 to 11.5 depending on the boots. I have really skinny legs too. I wear the Large size. The XL would be way to big for me.

I have the kuiu and the wife has or crocks. We use them quite a bit. Crocks are louder no doubt about it but they will hold up and I have had no problem with my kuiu.

I have 50+ days in my kuiu set and she pry has double in the or. Both look pretty much brand new.

I have used just about every brand mentioned here. OR, Sitka, and First Lite are the one ton trucks durability wise. Kryptek will be tough great for snowy conditions with their fit, lighter weight than other offerings out there.

I wrote a gear lab last issue in EBJ that covered Gaitors.

I should also mention that a bunch of the guys here have used the Kenetrek's and really like them as well.

I have the Kuiu and really enjoy them. They are solidly built, quiet enough and most importantly, they stay in place. My OR versions are much louder and tend to slide down over the miles as I walk.
