I need assistance from the group as I can dull a hunting knife in a few minutes of attempting to get an edge on a knife. What sharpener / stone have you found to work best for you? I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks and happy trails out there this fall.

I'm in the market for one as well and from the research I have done I heard a lot of good things about the smiths diamond sharpening stones. That's most likely the one I am going to pull the trigger on.

DMT also makes some nice folding diamond sharpeners, similar to smith. Warthog makes some real nice base camp/kitchen sharpeners. In the field, I have used a the small $10 ish smith, a similarly priced redi-edge, both work well. I've also used a very small knives of Alaska sharpener (not sure it is sold anylonger), smallest and lightest of all. Anymore, I have gone to an Outdoor edge Razor system, carry several blades, then touch the blades up at home or in camp, so I don't usually carry a sharpening tool in the field anymore.

I highly suggest getting the Lansky sharpening system. I could not sharpen a knife but boy can I dull one. With this system, I can sharpen a knife so sharp the hair literally falls of your arm when you shave it with your knife. It's not a fast system to get that edge, but once you get the edge on both sides of the knife just right, when you touch it up it only takes a few minutes and it's back to great shape again.

If I had not purchased the Lansky and had found this one before I made the purchase, I likely would have gone with this one. Both are great though.

It sure is nice to have sharp knives in the house! Kitchen, pocket, and hunting, and everyone is super sharp!!

I started with the outdoor edge Razor Blaze knife last year and it works great. 2 blades for my entire bull on Thursday, including the face.

I have a Lansky and Gatco and like them both but after checking out the KME I am impressed! I may have to pick one up. Thanks 6mm.

I use a small pocket sharpener made by Smiths Abrasives. It is Model CCKS 2 Step Knife Sharpener and sell for around 5 to 6.00. It is yellow and really does a great job, very fast, a few swipes and knife is sharp enough to shave.

I agree with Scott on this one... No need to sharpen knives again. I have done 2 deer with the same blade and did the majority of my bull last year with one. Changed the blade about 2/3 of the way through.

A friend of mine bought the Razor Blaze a year ago and had a problem with the blades not staying in the knife. They kept pulling away from the blade carrier. Anyone else have a problem with this? If so what is the fix? This is the single reason I haven't bought one yet.

I bought the smiths over the weekend and wasn't really happy with it. My buddy had an actual stone and some oil and I used that and was much more impressed.

I have had zero issues with mine. I could see a possible issue if it wasn't cleaned properly between uses?

His was new out of the box. Said he even returned it and got another and it did the same thing. I think there must have been something wrong in the way he was using it. I'm not sure. I'm seriously considering getting one. I have a Swing Blaze now and love that. However I'm not sure how I will sharpen the gut blade side of it. The Razor Blaze eliminates that problem.

Personally as far as a sharpener I use a Worksharp. Love that thing. Takes all the guess work out of the angles for me. Couple swipes with two different grit bands and I'm back in business.

I have used stone and oil forever. Fine on one side and med. on the other. It's about the size of a can of chew. I can touch up a blade pretty quick and if I take my time I can get a blade sharp enough to shave with.

To sharpen the gut blade side, i just use the Outdoor Edge Cerma Steel Sharpener (ceramic rod). It took some time for me to figure out what I was doing, but once I got it, it doesn't take long to get it razor sharp while sitting in front of the TV watching hunting shows. At one time I was going to send it back to OE to have them do it, but the lady told me that the owner would sharpen them himself using that rod. I figured I might as well try it and it has worked out well.

He must be holding it up near the blade release button. I have cleaned numerous animals with the two Edge knives I have and have never had ant issues with blades coming out.

Im a custom knife maker. I do a lot of custom butchering of both domestic and wild game. Ive been making knives and using them on animals for more than 3 decades. Likewise I designed and produce a product called the Stay Sharp broadhead sharpening guide. Ive made it a focus of mine to produce a razors edge. Currently I don’t offer a knife sharpening guide but that is in the works. Blade sharpening is a skill set that used to be mastered my every man but that has fallen off in modern times. Such is modern life.

For a guided or consistent angle holding tool, you will do well with a KME or Lansky. Good sharpening guides really pay for themselves in many ways but one should work on mastering the skill set of freehand honing. Personally I shudder at the thought of disposable blades but such is today’s disposable society and filling landfills.

I worked in a fur shed and used an electric sharpener occasionally and a ceramic V style sharpener often.

I bought a razor edge knife this year. It did not seem to be razor sharp, but I used one blade for the entire elk. It was not super sharp but stayed sharp. I did have problems when I was done getting the old blade out and a new one in and locked in. To much stuff gunked up the knife system and I had to use hot water and the kitchen sink to clean it up enough to change blades.

My deer I used an old case knife sharpened on the worksharp knife sharpener. Holy shit, that knife was sharp. Way sharper than the razor edge knife. Granted the case knife is over 30 years old and soft steel that sharpens easily.

I'll be the odd man out here and say that I got one of the Worksharp units and I do not like it. I don't think it does as good a job on my knives as my Lansky set does. As far as sharpening in the field, I've found it best to just carry 2 knives and switch back and forth between them when cutting up an animal. That's what works best for me anyway.
