King's Hunting Rules

Well we all take another step closer to King's Hunting Rules with the passage of New Mexico SB 196 today.

Take out the WMA's & cow tags and DIY NR's get a whopping 5% of the tags. What a bizarre scam they will have now with unprecedented rules like: Outfitters get double the tags as NR DIYers!???; No NR on WMA's; No NR cow tags??? Where else can you find another state doing ANY of these? And the legislators' argument for it was they wanted 90% for residents as is typical of most other states. Ya right. What they want is welfare from wealthy NR at the expense of the "hunting heritage" of the less affluent. So help me if I ever hear one NM legislator use that catch phrase again.............you know what they are full of.

I believe New Mexico will have overtaken Utah as the King of King's Hunting Rules.

Only way I see this trainwreck ending is if CO & WY both institute a reciprocation policy.

Anyone wanna guess what the next state to screw NR's will be?

I hear ya, if you don't have millions sitting in the bank your options suck! where the hell are we going to hunt in the future when every state has nothing but the wealthy tags available? the states like utah, wy moose and sheep etc. should give us a refund of all the money we have been screwed out of when we never draw (ha yeah right) then maybe we could afford a "wealthy tag" one year out of our life and acually hunt a place we have been trying to for years.

I believe states' should have the freedom to manage their own game living on federal land, but all American's, rich and poor, own it and it should not be prostituted to this extent for just the wealthy so they can line their coffers while Joe Hunter sits at home. There's got to be a limit to this stuff somewhere. It's one thing to limit nonresident tags in general and quite another to limit based on their income level.

It's bad and to add insult to injury New Mexico refuses to institute a preference points system like some of the western states do.

I put in for Elk and Antelope there this year, but if I don't get drawn(0 for 6 on elk and 0 for 1 on antelope so far), I don't think I will be applying in NM again until they change that stupidity.

Everyone ought to apply this year in NM before the rules change for 2012. I'll probably still put in there no matter what system they have since its a neighboring state. What really sucks is the increased fees. I don't mind expensive tags and long odds for quality hunts, but I feel like I'm getting bent over when you have tall application fees or mandatory license purchases (see AZ, UT, NV).

They are trying to fix a very small part of the equation. The true root of the issue that they refuse to dive into and attempt to fix is the landowner tags. I saw a stat somewhere that something like almost 40% of the available big game tags in NM are landowner tags which of course eventually end up in the hands of non-residents. Tweaking 5% of the problem while almost 40% of the potential issue still exists is ridiculous. It's kind of like the Fed Gov refusing to deal with Social Security and Medicare/Medicade which is 50% of the total budget and then turn around and pat themselves on the back for cutting out 1/1000th of a % of the budget, like they're really getting somewhere. Just my opinion.

Ya I think very few people really realize how serious the King's Hunting is in NM when you take into account those landowner tags. I don't know exact figures but basically of all the big game tags available in NM around 35% will go to wealthy NR's while the DIYers will end up with less than 5%. That's pathetic.

I suppose it depends how you look at it. Idaho has lots of opportunity but the quality has gone down hill NM has some good quality but it won't have much opportunity. It would be nice if there were a happy medium.
