For some reason I was thinking the late season were there was only 1 tag available. But you also need to hope that there isn't any hunters that have been just banking points that joins the San Juan early pool. I looked at one chart that showed as many as 16 applicants with max points as late as 2013, so they either went somewhere else or are just banking points.
You're correct, from 2013 to 2015 there has been one tag for the late San Juan rifle hunt, before that there were two tags.
I've been applying for the San Juan early rifle hunt where there were four tags until 2010, three tags from 2011 to 2013 and two tags in 2014 and 2015. The odds have been quite good for several years since before 2010 there were two tags awarded in the max point pool. Although there are fewer tags the last few years, the number of guys applying each year has dropped.
A couple years ago a guy on this forum with one more point than I swooped in and drew the San Juan early tag. I helped him make contact with one of the better local outfitters and he killed a very nice bull with them.
My personal goal for this tag is a personal best 370+ gross bull on DIY, so that guides my thinking of where to apply.
Boulder early rifle would be my second choice. I could have drawn it any year for the past 8+ years or so. Boulder can be a hit or miss for the top end bulls depending on the rut that year. Once my daughter graduates from high school and I can afford the time to do a summer scouting trip, I might jump on that opportunity.
Beaver and Pahvant early rifle are also interesting but they have only had one tag for the early rifle hunt for the past few years. Beaver would interest me since my earliest hunting memories were with my dad when he used to deer hunt there back in the 1970s.
We're in no hurry since we have other hunts in the queue until San Juan hits.
