Is it really DIY when you assemble a team or have some one else spot for you?

I hunt alone when I'm serious about it. When my daughters' come along they pack the .22 for grouse and it's more about letting them experience the outdoors and enjoying our hike. When they're tired we take a break, when they're cold we light a fire, and if they get bored we fool around in a creek or river or we call it a day. On our backpack hunts my partner and I always go in different directions so even though we carry radios we're hunting solo. The radios get turned on if we hear a shot, then we check to see if it was the other guy and if it was do they need a hand. Going out in a big group ie spotters, radios, cell phones etc would really lessen the experience for me. But if it's legal I can't really say much just I won't be taking part. DIY means just that to me, literally. Yourself nobody else.

Having a pack of people looking for your animal during the season is kinda dumb and cheapens the trophy. I've had good tags and people have been out and given me a heads up on a location of some nice bucks. It's almost always scouting though. I'll even give a guy a call if I know he has a tag and I saw a good animal.

Having 10 people out looking while you're hunting, as one guy said, is no different than having mossback inc. out looking. It also cheapens the hunt for anyone else who might have the tag.

My short answer no. I always thought DIY was just that even if you live far away. You work all year for the hunt you plan you strategize your plan, you scout when you can, and you go out and get it done. I would consider a close friend that is with you the whole way from start to finish with a tag part of that DIY hunt. I wouldn't call a absentee tag holder part of that if all he does is show up and shoot the animal that others find for him.DIY is Do It Yourself right?

I think it's DIY but this is a very slippery slope and many have already headed to the bottom.

I was on a sheep hunt where we had 5 including the hunter. I was there for another set of eyes and a good back, (mostly for a good back I think ;) ). We ended up getting the fella his ram.
It was still diy. Everyone hiked the mountains, the hunter scouted, we all conferred with each other on judging, we did it all by ourselves. That's diy imo. Everyone part of the "posse" so to say, that took their money, their time, and contributed to a successful hunt. No people were paid to do an aspect of the hunt. Isn't the goal to find the animal worthy of the tag, so what's the difference if it takes 1 or 20 people to help? Assuming it isn't like guiding where money is at stake, that's DIY. It's almost like some are jealous of having multiple people, much like some cry cuz they can't afford auction tags.

Some are mixing DIY with SOLO imo.

I have been on a couple of guided hunts that were really tough actually of lot tougher than some of my DIY. I have to travel over 1,000 miles one way to hunt in Wyoming & Colorado and almost that in Texas and NM. I hunt with a best friend who is one of my best hunting partner's and my brother. The memories we have created from our past hunts are incredible. If I actually lived in one of the western states where I hunt I would do some hunts totally by myself but the hunts we do together are still in my mind DIY because that's what were doing. We are hunting based on the past experiences and knowledge we have gained. I can definitely see where a " Solo DIY " hunt can be rewarding. I would not begin to measure another persons value of hunt. Everyone has their own standards, desire, determination as well as ability.

Nothing wrong with hunting with a guide. Nothing wrong hunting with friends, nothing wrong hunting alone. Just be honest. If you enjoyed yourself, then you had a good trip, bottom line.

I've noticed how popular bashing other types of hunting has become. It seems some of the Western hunters are the worst about bashing the way people hunt in other parts of the country.

I know one site in particular that almost always has a thread bashing the way other people hunt. Doesn't' matter if it is hunting over a feeder, hunting with dogs, long rang hunting, crossbow hunting, hunting with lighted knocks, hunting with 4 wheelers, etc.. they are almost always bashing someone else to make themselves feel better.

IMO all hunters need to find common ground so we can work together instead of against each other. As a fairly small group of people the last thing we need is division when in reality we need all the help we can get.

It's not just hunters, it's human nature to compare ourselves to others and try to make ourselves look better. And to be honest, sometimes I'll have had an enjoyable hunting season, but when I see someone elses pictures and hear their story, it's hard to not let a little envy creep in... :)

1) it is nice to share a special hunt that may be a once in a life time opportunity with friends who want you to succeed.
2) other people who do that are Jerks...

I don't see anyone bashing anyone else here so curious to see where you are getting that. A question was asked (Is it really DIY when you assemble a team or have some one else spot for you?) So where is the bashing everyone can have a opinion on this.

Guess it just depends how you look at it. Some people might think this thread is trying to discredit guided hunts or hunting with several fiends who help as a non DIY hunt. So basically presenting that DIY hunts are the best and people who use guides or groups of spotters are not on the same level.

BTW you never did answer my question about what your suggestions for improving federal land management after you asked me the same thing. Post #76, #59, and #61.

I really don't see the need to repeat what others have said on that thread as my opinion and thoughts on the subject are pretty much in line with theirs. As far as this thread goes I still don't see any hunters bashing other hunters.

Absolutely. That is to be expected. But then saying things to discount the other hunt seems to be a popular reaction as well. I think that is where hunters cross the line and create division among hunters.

I remember the recent general tag giant that came out of Wyoming last season. The first response I saw was "well it was taken with a crossbow so it really is not and archery hunt".

I'll be the first to admit that I thought the same thing when I found out it was killed with a crossbow but when I look back I realize how immature that reaction was. I think we could all be a little more understanding of how other people hunt in their neck of the woods and not say negative things just because it's different than we do things when we hunt.

So you call me out and ask me a question, which I answer, and then when asked to answer the same question you dodge and avoid answering. Pretty obvious what is going on there.

Pretty obvious that you incite things on this website with your negative tone as others have mentioned..

You called me out buddy. I answered your question and when I asked you the same question you dodged. You tied to start something and now you can't finish it. You are obviously the one trying to start trouble here.

What is really funny is how you keep going back and editing your responses. Pretty obvious what is going on.

Yes it is obvious I am here for the hunting parts of the website and promoting hunting. Editing does it really bother you. Have a great day!
