I suppose it would really matter on where I was hunting and how well I thought my chances of doing better were. in most general hunts around here I WOULD SAY ,YES he is a shooter.
but in some draw hunts ,I would say no and pass.
it also depends entirely on wether I am hunting primarily for meat or bone.

he is a nice buck but by no means a monster buck

I would shoot him. But I'm not from there and I dont have time to scout bucks and units like a lot of you guys do!

Give him one more year. Good mass, will be even better next year.

Lets say you find this guy 5 min into opening light on a early season hunt - do you think he is a day 1 shooter?
He is to me... especially if it's an early season hunt, assuming your archery or muzzleloader hunting. The only way I'd say maybe not is if you were rifle hunting in a trophy area with potential for a monster.

Yep, all day long with any means. I'll take a filled tag over an unfilled one, so if he is in a good spot to get at I would for sure go after him.

He's a good buck and would be hard to pass but if he could get to be a year or two older he will be a great buck. It would be hard to pass but it would depend on all the circumstances that have already been mentioned.

Depends on the tag and what else I had seen, but I would definitely have a hard time passing him on most tags.

If I were rifle hunting a limited area I would pass and continue hunting for something larger. If I were bow hunting I'd be planning my stalk!!

here's a logical way to look at it.
never pass on a deer, you would shoot on the last day.
if I would kill it on the last, I would kill it on the first. not saying I would or would not kill it , it depends entirely on what I was after.

It would all depend on what you are after and how long you have to hunt.

Just remember the old adage "Don't pass up on the first day what you would shoot on the last day"

I have passed up and quite a few just like him hoping for a larger one and have come home with tag soup quite often.

if that was here in CO, and it's an early rifle tag, then it is one of the high country wilderness hunts; you probably worked your tail off to get to where that deer is at, and that experience to me is worth more than a couple more inches of antler. I would mow that deer down in a nanosecond.

For me, simple answer, yes! Couple guys of already said it, if I would shoot on day five I've learned over the years to shoot on Day one. Especially seeing there's a 99% chance I would have a bow in my hand.

He is one of the bucks that is just right there.

Here is my take.. The small sticker and good mass makes him one you check out real close but I am a sucker for a sticker... He would not score high at all but still a cool buck and that trumps score any day in my book. Good news is I believe he lived through the archery and muzzy seasons anyway so hope to see him on our next trip around the sun.

You guys who have watched the video can tell just about when the other 2 hunters in the area sky lined them selves.. Just after I shut off the video this buck worked right below them then out of the basin behind them. They never knew he was there. That was the last time I saw him while hunting.

If it helps lets say he was in a 0-1 point resident Co archery unit..

For me he is not a shooter as with the time I put into scouting am usually looking for a special buck. This one went into the gps notes as 170" w mass n sticker so ck in 17.. Then again I have been known to pass on bucks until the end of the season lol...

Scott yea no worries feel free to share it.
