Cabelas has some UTV's for sale. I think they are Colman? About $10k they seem a bit on the cheap side but have lots of room and good ground clearance. Anyone have experience with them?
I have no experience but they are made in China so I would be leery.

It always perplexes me to see the electric Bad Boy Buggies in front of the Cabelas here, those things have no business out west in the mountains (would be a sweet neighborhood cruiser or golf cart though). I guess it's the same as seeing the tree stands and white tail hunting gear in the store.

what's even more weird you hit the gas and it wil kind of slow you down withe the engine

when doing this you are engaging the clutch, that is why you slow down. common method of slowing down on a snowmobile going down hill. give gas to engage the clutch than brake than gas than brake.

Yes very similar to a snowmobile.

I pulled up the WY ORV rules and will go over them later. However, could anyone give specific examples of trails that are open to only ORV (50")? I assume the NF and BLM roads are open to all ORV correct? Just specific trails I could prob find on a trail/roads map published by the NF? This is all new to me, I usually just get out and walk, but after meeting some people over the last holiday weekend they were riding on a WHMA and my wife thought that would be fun. So it looks like she is onboard.

That 500 is one of the more affordabe sxs I have seen, their are major differences between it and the 700's. ANyone have any experience with the 500?

In the Bighorns most of the trails have 50" or less signs on them on NF. I'm I do see quite a few wider utvs on them so I'm not sure if they enforce it or not? I use an atv to stay in compliance. I don't remember seeing the 50" or less on BLM. Unit 45 is where I'm most familiar so it could be different in other units or areas of Wyoming.

When I rode in the northern Bighorns 14 months ago, about 20 percent of the trails were restricted to 50 inches. So I don't agree that "most" are restricted unless something has changed in the last 14 months.

In the Snowies and the Sierra Madres, where I do most of my riding, almost none of the trails are restricted to 50 inches.

Some of the better utv side by sides like Can Am and Artic Cat are wider than 50 inches. These manufacturers usually produce some models to meet the 50 inch rule. I doubt I would buy a 50 inch side by side just for using on width restricted trails. This is such a large investment, I think you need to do a lot of research before making the purchase.

Honda makes a fine machine, I have a Honda ATV and a Ranger UTV and I love both. One thing about the UTV I would ask, especially if you plan on a winch, which I would recommend, is does Honda have a multi point winch, where you can move the winch to either the front of the machine, or the back. I have the multi point on my Ranger and find it invaluable. If you get stuck moving forward, why pull your self that direction. Also the winch is darn handy for skinning game.

I just got the 500. Can't compare it to anything else because it's the first and only sxs I've ever driven. But, man is it a blast!

It obviously meets the 50" restriction trails which is really important to me but the best part is I can haul in the bed of my pickup and don't need to pull a trailer.

Well we got our sxs. My grandfather ran across a heck of a deal on a Polaris 900 Ranger crew, was able to purchase it through the farm (no tax) and got a a windshield, roof and 4 year warranty for basically what the taxes would have been.

My contribution was minimal, so I did not try to change his mind from the Honda.

This thing is a beast! To big imo, main reason why he wanted it (to haul my grandmother and the great grandkids around the farm). Hauling it out West is gonna be pricey, heck its big enough to drive out there!

Thanks everyone for the reccomendations and hopefully we will be getting the bed bloody real soon!
