I use cleaned out plastic milk jugs a bunch. Refreeze and reuse, less water in cooler. If I run low on water, I been known to drink it. But if wanting to keep ice for a week or longer, I usually buy blocks, pack them tight and put a bit of dry ice in the cooler. For the few times a year I need to keep ice a week or so, I buy blocks, I don't mind buying them as I lack the patience to use a mold weeks in advance.

One thing that makes a big difference for me is to wrap my cooler with an old down sleeping bag or something similar. I also throw my pillows on the top when not being used. Anything that adds insulation will keep ice longer.

We all pitched in and bought two giant Yeti coolers a few years ago. It hit 70 degrees almost daily during 1st season last year. We packed two of the coolers full of blocks, cubes, and then a few pounds of dry ice. (Might have been some beer mixed in. :) The coolers were still more than half full of ice a week later. They sat in the back of the pickup shaded by a tree, nothing more.

I had milk jugs crack over time. I have been using 1 gallon crystal geyser bottles frozen in my freezer for about 5 years. Works much better then milk jugs did, especially with leaks.

Some of the thicker containers have a better shape too. Regardless, mine go bye bye after every summer/early fall.

I've had one of the commercial blue ice plastic freezer packs rupture too, what a mess. They worked almost as good as dry ice for 10+ years, still use them for fishing. But for hunting I use dry ice to keep ice for a long time, as I don't have to make room for it on the way home.

I havesome blue ice packs that are over 20 years old. I used to get them from work when live lobststers were shipped to the store where I used to work. Sadly the number of them I have left has dwindled away after years of sending food home with our kids and they never return.

If you have a big enough freezer put your Ice in your cooler and the whole thing in the freezer, top it off with a few blocks of Dry Ice and good to go as long as your smart about where you place the cooler and dont open it.
