They always say you don't have a chance if you don't apply.

The kid has a great hunt ahead of him.

I could try for 100 years and not draw it.

I'm the type of person that can't draw a tag if there are 99 tags and 100 applicants. I would be that one that didn't draw.

I used to say that until I drew a great New Mexico elk tag. I didn't capitalize on it though. :(
Your luck could change in an instant. Keep at it!

I've been working on it now for over 50 years in the draws, I don't have too many left in me.

The only tags that I have been able to draw are the ones where I am maxed out on the points.

I'm with Jim on this one! I don't get lucky like some people i know on drawing tags. My ex-wife drew 128-1 mule deer tag in Wyo. her 2nd year applying. Think it was 2% draw odds then, she also drew a bull buffalo tag here in Wyo. her 3rd year applying. And has drawn a few good antelope tags area 64 in Wyo. 3 times in about 6 years. I'm still at it for buffalo and 128 deer. I'm not as old as Jim, "sorry Jim" but i'm catching up in a hurry it seems. I did finally draw my moose tag here in Wyo. but i looked at draw odds and what areas i could draw with my 13 points and put in. I don't see the moose herds getting any better anytime soon and i wanted to shoot one before they are a once in a lifetime tag here in Wyo.

Also, does it seem a little "fishy" that alot of youths draw good tags like moose,mt. goat or bighorn sheep here in Wyoming usually within the first 3-4 years applying? I would like to know how many adults to youths are in the same draws together, I would bet it's 8 to 1 or more. But low and behold alot of youths seem to draw tags pretty readily from what i've seen. I wonder if the fish and game dept. are trying to recruit more hunters and what better way to get a kid away from his iphone or computer than to give them a highly coveted trophy tag that some people will never draw in their life time? Just my "theory" on that!

I would like to know of any non-resident that has drawn a hybrid tag. When there are only a handful of tags for lets say unit 10 elk tags for non-residents I doubt that anyone will ever draw those tags.

Let me quote the regs:
"Nonresident caps apply. (Units with low numbers of available licenses may not have any remaining for the Hybrid Drawing.) Regs also say: "20% of the available licenses will be issued through a random drawing."

It really doesn't say what "low numbers" mean and what the threshold is.

I have read those regs and wondered how to interpret them. I do apply for the hybrid draws but I really do not think that a non-resident can draw a tag in units with very low number of tags available. It would be interesting to have someone explain it so I could quit wasting my time applying for those tags. Thanks Colorado Cowboy for your input.

The thing that the hybrid drawing does is it allows the applicant the chance to draw a tag in a specific unit with a lot fewer points than what they would need in the regular draw. If you don't draw you get a PP with nothing really wasted.

Look at it this way, if the unit you want to hunt takes 20 PP for a non resident to draw and you can apply for a hybrid draw with only 7 why not try if you have fewer than the number of points that it will take to draw a tag?

I know that they used to offer non resident tags in some of the hybrid draws and I have had a non resident brother in law apply in them but I haven't noticed any lately for non residents only in a lot of units.

I know how the system is suppose to work but my thought is that in low number of tag units that a non-resident will never draw a tag.

Even if there is only 1 non resident tag offered someone will draw it.

But that is where you need to do your homework on the draw odds and see if waiting 50 years to hunt that unit is worth it to you.

When I am building points (and have over 5), I put one of the really tough draw units with a hybrid tag as 1st choice. If I don't draw, I still get a point and I still have a chance at a tag, even with high odds. Costs me nothing as I would put in for a point anyway.
