Hurt my ankle, not sure what is next

I hurt my ankle while jogging which will be three week ago on Sunday. I've had an x-ray, which showed no break or fracture. I've been hobbling around on it ever since. The doctor game me some pain pills which send me to the moon and back. (I would make a terrible druggie because I'm taking half the dose and still on cloud 9!) The good thing is it seems to be getting better, but still some pain in it at all times. I'm not sure what all this means especially with a sheep, moose, elk, bear and antelope hunt here in Colorado this fall starting in September.

Just kinda bummed about the whole thing at the moment.

graybird,

Ankle injuries can really be bothersome. Not sure if your doctor recommended it but I would consider getting some physical therapy. The sessions aren't exactly cheap but it could really save your season if it cuts healing time down. Good luck to you.

Ankles are strange. Sometime you can turn it and not have a break or tear but it seems like it takes forever to heal completley.
Good luck to you.

Wow, that really stinks. You got some pretty good tags there to take care of. Good luck with your recovery and hunting season. Make sure it is in good shape before you push it. Nothing worse than prolonging the recovery time.

I broke a ankle years ago and it took quite a while to get it back in shape. My suggestion would be to not do anything to inflame it anymore than it already is. Let nature take its course then slowly start back into your workout routine. Mine is strong as ever now and it is one of the parts I concentrate on in the gym so it doesn't get injured again.

Keep your cardio conditioning going by exercising in a pool until that ankle heels. If you can't do that, buy some athletic tape and wrap that thing as good as you can, and power through it. Just don't twist it again before it's completely healed, been there done that. Not a pleasant feeling. (Old basketball injuries, I've twisted both ankles a few dozen times, there's nothing left to tear loose in my ankles any more, when I twist them now they just hurt for a few minutes and that's it. Lucky me, ha. )

Did the doc give a diagnosis? Prescribe antiinflammatories? Or any rehab recommendations? RICE (rest ice compression and elevation) is the best place to start depending on the diagnosis given.

Doc said it was a ligament on the inner part of my ankle and some soft tissue damage along with swelling to my Achilles.

I never twisted my ankle, there was a crack in the road about 2" wide that was running parallel to my direction. When I stepped in it, my foot kinda flexed, but it didn't start hunting for another half mile. But, when it started, holy cow. I was about 1.5 miles from the house and just powered thru it, however I should have called the house and had my wife come get me.

Just ready to get this thing healed and back on the trail. Thanks for the encouragement!

I think best you can do is do not bother it, let it heal by itself, you can put some light bandage around, make sure not tight, voltaren gel might help, talk to your doctor. Avoid any steep areas and stairs, proceed with your exercise when it is fully healed. It takes while but you stil have some time before season starts.

Good luck.

Speedy recovery man. I just tore my meniscus, so I'm trying to get surgery within the month so I can be good to go before season starts in September.

When you finally are able to get back in the hills I would make sure you have boots that have lots of ankle support. A lot of the boots people use nowdays are mostly nylon around the ankle and don't give much support so they can be flexible and lightweight.

Was your doc an orthopedic or family practice? A sports medicine orthopedic doc would be the best doc to see for your situation.
Physical therapy can have a significant improvement in recovery as long is it's prescribed. Ankle injuries can linger for months or longer, if not taken care of.

Good Luck

Basketball paid my way through college so I have been through quite a few and seen a bunch more..

You want to increase the blood flow to make it heal faster. Buckets man = hot and cold buckets.. Get a 5 gallon bucket half full of ice and fill it with water then put your foot in it until you cant stand the pain anymore. Then take you foot of the ice bucket and put it into very warm water but not so hot it will burn you but nice and hot - until again you cant stand the pain then return your foot to the ice bucket.. Repeat for a 1 hour every day. This method will best help early on with a sprain or the first couple of days is best but it should help you as well.

Also I would get up and on it. It will hurt but moving around on it if it is not broken will help you in the long end.

Good luck.

Well, it has been about 6 weeks now since I hurt the ankle. I haven't had any pain in it for about 2 weeks now. I have a busy week of travel this coming week, but plan on giving it a test run on Friday. Hopefully, I'll be able to get back in the routine.

I would be careful running that is pretty high impact. Maybe row or a elliptical would be better to start with. Something low impact.

What do you have access to and maybe I can suggest alternatives to running. There are a million things you can do for conditioning and exercise with just body weight......without pounding on your freshly heard ankle

Usually you can take some steroid pills to make the process much faster. I broke mine bad years ado in late June and the best thing I did was buying an awesome boot for ankle support. I was hunting that September.
