I use both HF & EJ, but as you mention, avoid the top 5 choices in almost all instances, even though I am in or near the top point pools. I kind of like some benefits of HF. I have found several grossly underated units in some states that are totally unrated by HF. Love these flyin off the radar. Hope they stay that way.

HF has already made one mistake. Creating a forum, but making you pay $100 extra to access it? Really? There are like a thousand free hunting forums out here. Charging any fee creates a barrier to entry that will highly restrict participant numbers, and thus usefulness.
Yea, I guess a hundred bucks wasn't enough for a magazine subscription with nice glossy pictures.....

It's a good publication but this new structure is a joke. Only reason I am keeping it is to know what units to avoid due to them pumping them up.

Can you get the magazine without subscribing? I never can find it anywhere and $100 for just a magazine is to much to me since I have no intention of using their app service.

Their app service is not included in the $100 subscription for the magazine. You have to get the subscription to receive magazines.

They send me adds once in a while. Sounded to me like the app service came with it for $100. I assumed you would pay something more for each app they put in for you. Maybe I didnt understand it. $100 for a magazine is alot I think. I would buy a copy to check out their magazine but I have never seen it on a stand anywhere.

I have been a huntin fool member off & on since 1996. When it first started out it was a letter printed on a letter head of cotton paper that was maybe 15 pages each month. Garth has grown quit substantively. I just got tired of him & his kid using it as a bragging board to show the rest of us if ya got $5000 or so to apply for tags at your disposal this could be you. Or if you want to spend $6500 or more for a land owner voucher you can kill what I kill. It can be a great tool though being he has a large audience that post stories of some quality critters. That is if you have points built up in some western states. I give members advice on units I've hunted in the past, even though I have not been a member for the last 5 years or so.

No landowner vouchers for me. If its not DIY public land or a landowner letting me hunt for next to nothing its not going to happen for me. Im doing good to afford the tag and fuel to get there. I always thought he was looking for people with more money then I have.

I like knowing where they're pimping so I can apply elsewhere. I do enjoy the photos of the animals, but am noticing a lot of eastern hunters in there that don't know as much about the west getting taken for a ride with their services. Note that they usually aren't hunting the units they pimp unless it's on a landowner tag.
I feel like I've seen their article on how to take photos about 20x in the last 5 years. They just change the format, author or the example photos every other month.
I enjoy the more DIY attitude with Eastmans as it's more my style. Just my .02

Other than the pictures, I am not impressed with HF. The stories are super short and not the quality of the stories in EBJ and EHJ. The info is far less useful than the MRS and the whole thing is done basically to get clients for the owners. That's backwards of the Eastmans' philosophy which is oriented toward the hunter and his benefit. It's no contest.

Interesting that Epic Outdoors are five of the guys who left Huntin Fool including family (Jason Carter, Adam Bronson, Chris Petersen, Kurt Connley, John Petersen) and they are based in the same small town of Cedar City that Huntin Fool is based out of.
Not really surprising, with HF's recent sell it makes you wonder how long it's been getting shopped around.
