shes a small framed gal, 115lb and stands 5'4". i want a gun that she can use and that my son can start shooting, he is 8. im a big fan of lever action 30-30's. seems about the right size to start out with right? not to much kick but plenty of umph to knock some deer and elk down with... reasonable distances ofcourse. input?

30-30 will get the job done, just ask my antelope! I dont shoot over 200 yards with it with peep sights and after that it starts dropping pretty hard anyways. has she done much shooting? I think I would try a few and see what she is most comfortable with and also what fits her best. As much as I like levers I think I would get her a bolt but really the best thing to do is buy her and your son atleast a 1/2 guns so they have some choices:D

savage long range hunter in 25-06. It doesn't kick as much as the 30-30 and very accurate. Great caliber for antelope and deer. I have taken 2 elk with it and it is good for them as long as shot placement is right. The kick is light enough for small women or kids to shoot and not develop a flinch. Many women are very good shots, most can out shoot their husbands.

What they really want is a pre 64 model 70 Winchester featherweight in 243 win:D
That was my first center fire!

Dang now if only Winchester had also made that thing in 6mm Remington. Either the 6mm Remington or 243 work great on deer and antelope and people generally can shoot them very accurately as they don't beat a person up. Either will work on elk with good bullets and good shot placement. Again most folks shoot these rounds very well.

The .257 Roberts and the 25-06 are both great for deer and antelope and can take elk handily. They would cover her list of game better than the 6mm's and again she should be able to shoot them very well. A 260 Remington or 6.5x55 Swede would also be great. On the larger end a rifle that fit her in a 7mm-08 or a 280 Remington should not bet too much if you can get her shooting one of the lighter cartridges for a while until she gets skilled at it.

Congratulations on a new hunting partner. I hope she enjoys it and likes getting out with you in the field. Antelope and deer hunts when the weather is not so brutal is a really good way to get her started. The weather is usually nice early on and a lot of game can is typically seen. Both are helpful to new hunters so they enjoy the experience especially starting out.

That 243 killed alot of blacktails and yotes when I was growing up! I havent used it much since i got my 270 and it was my fathers gun and he is against my putting a scope on it. I am thinking about putting peep sights in it and using it on backpack hunts since its lighter then the 270 though. I thought of the 257 Roberts too but its not chambered in alot of guns and would be more expensive. 243 would be great for wife and son to start out with and its chambered in alot of different guns so lots of options with it and lots of factory ammo available too.

haha, those are some nice, classic guns! i have a hard time retiring my .270, needs some work done on it. same original barrel stock and action. still shoots better than any gun ive ever fired, mostly because ive shot it since i was 12. i still have the old scope that came with gun but had to change it out with a modern scope:cool:

If your having trouble spending your money I can always help ya find guns to spend it on;) Alot of why I dont get a new gun is I dont want to retire the 270! It always gets the job done and I cant see how a new gun would do it any better.

I just bought my wife a youth model 7mm-08. We really like it so far but don't have any hunting experience with it. This fall will be her first elk hunt so we will give a great test. Recoil is more than the .243 she has been shooting but considerably less than my 30-06 or .270. I am still trying to decide what loads to use... Narrowed it down to 140 grain Accubonds or 120 grain TTSX. Gun likes both...

Talk about getting a cart so you have to get a horse for it:D

Walmart had some 243's a few days ago!
