Red huckleberries are my favorite. Although I could be a little biased. I have a special place where i can swim around a lake and pick red huckleberries from the waters edge. A great place to take my lady.

I pick the coastal evergreen huckleberries in the fall but I start my season of berry picking in the high country here in CA picking those beautiful red huckleberries. They are equally good but if I can pick edibles in the high country to edibles down low, I'd choose the reds anytime.

Plus you can get a huckleberry pie earlier than anyone else.

For you seasoned Huckleberry pickers I need a little help. I live just outside the Boise area. My wife and I are headed up to the McCall area. Do you just pick a Forrest Road and drive while looking for the berries or is it best to hike around? We really want to find and try some.

I'm sure there are berries there I don't know where though. id go to a local family owned grocery store and ask. drive around forest rds, if berries are on you will see cars pulled over in random spots, over here the berries between 5 and 6500ft are ready. berry.jpg be sure you know what berry your picking though. good luck, let us know

Thanks. That was my next question. Are there any poisonous mimics that look exactly like the Huckleberry?

Thanks again!

My favorite way to eat huckleberries is in the early fall.

What I do, while I work and tend to family chores, is to convince a big black boar to eat as much as he can from June through August, then.....well you get the idea.

Took the family picking. We found some nice patches. My kids loved it which was great having some extra hands. Came home with 10.5 cups of Huckleberries. The kids are excited about trying some muffins and pancakes with some of their Huckleberries. Any issues freezing them in a ziplock bag? I don't want to vacuum seal them and run the risk of smashing them. I could freeze them first and then vacuum seal them. Thanks for the help guys!!
