Keeping track, when you apply for multiple states, is a bit of a task for myself. Anyone have a good system?
Like a lot of the guys on here, I keep track of everything on an Excel spreadsheet. I have a tab for each application year and just copy the tab from the previous year to start a new year. I organize everything in rows grouped by each state with all licences, stamps, species, and all available species choices (if applicable) listed below each state. My columns have the application deadline, date submitted, amount submitted, non-refundable points and app fees, refund amount, hunt unit, hunt #, hunt area description, # of tags, weapon, season start date, season end date, drawing date, results date, results by (i.e. e-mail, phone, etc), draw results reference (i.e. hunter ID, SSN, etc), points going into draw/possible points, refund date, draw Y/N, last years odds. As I complete an application, I shade the row(s) yellow so I can see at a glance what apps I have yet to complete. As refunds are received I log the dates and match up the refund amount to the refund I received and then color that cell a new color so I know what refunds are outstanding.
When I first started doing my apps in '98 or so, almost every state was done via paper apps so I kept a folder for each state with copies of the proclamation, my apps, refunds, etc. Now that almost everything is done via on-line apps (the only exceptions off the top of my head being CO moose, sheep, and goat), I just print to PDF receipts of everything and file them digitally using Dropbox so I can access them from anywhere and also don't have to keep a bunch of paper.
I also try and keep my points updated on Hunterstrailhead and HuntinFool and receive their text notifications on upcoming draw deadlines. Additionally I have all the deadlines on my I-phone calendar as well with alerts set a few days ahead of the draw deadlines. I have a hunt calendar on my I-phone as well to map out potential conficts due to hunt date overlaps.
Like a lot of you guys, I enjoy the application season as well. Reviewing the MRS, looking at maps, odds reports, harvest reports, record books, strategizing, checking draw results, etc. as it is all part of the fun. When you actually draw a tag after all that time and work it is a very exciting!
