I had a gentleman ask me if I had any numbers to fall to get a horseman to pack meat out of mountains, there was a time I had a list of a few numbers but I cant find that list and now I'm intrigued...... how does one go about finding out who to call for these services?? I couldn't find much online, but I'm not net savvy by any means. I'm sure a guiding service but surely they are all busy and in mountains this time of year. is there some big list somewhere? I think that would be great to have on this forum, a list of horsemen for hire.

Just outfitters in the area, some have extra guys for that reason some don't, it's just how it works out.
Just a little info it is illegal to hire a random person to pack meat out of an area of they are not a licensed bonded and insured outfitter in the area.
A horseman can pack your meat out for you for free but there can be no trade or money exchanged unless they are the licensed outfitter.
It is illegal for another outfitter to pack meat out of an area if it is another outfitters permit area.

is that so in every state? some kind of forest service rule I assume?
To most extent yes...different states, different rules still though. In WY an outfitter could pack out game in most areas, because outfitters are not designated a "Specific" area that another outfitter cant set foot in like Idaho is. In Idaho..an outfitter is specifically designated an area defined by drainage boundaries etc...and no other outfitter can or will be permitted inside those boundaries. . . Best thing to do would be to call the local outfitter, at least make that attempt, because any outfitter if available is usually not going to turn down easy money.

I thought there was specific laws in place for National Forest that described "game retrieval" as not assisting in the hunt.

I know for sure Colorado, those are forest service rules so I'm sure they are close to that in every state. I like to inform everyone cause if a hunter hires an illegal outfitter they can get in just as much trouble as the illegal outfitter. I think a list would be helpful although it would be more of advertising for any of the people that put their name on the list although it would be helpful for anyone in a bind to be able to find numbers just in case. I had some folks begin packing their elk out this year and hurt their ankle, were more worried about gettin the meat off than getting to a doctor so they called us

I learned the hard way, most any forest service honcho, can within certain limits, apply their own interpretation of the rules. Odds are your hunt dates won't allow time to do anything but accept the "ruling". So I'd not assume any one forest service rule applies to another forest area under a different honcho... Best to call and check with the head folks in your chosen area, and be sure to get names and dates of the conversation.

You don't pay them but they might get a nice tip for the use of their horses or find a couple hundred dollar bills laying on the ground by their horse trailer.

Where I elk hunt there is a couple college age kids that will pack meat out for you. Everyone gives them a "donation" for packing the meat.

Imo if there isn't an outfitter permitted in the area it doesn't bother me a whole lot. Everyone needs help. And there is kind of a weird thing with that where doing it on your back is completely different than on a horse. If someone is in my permits hauling meat horseback illegally then I do have a talk with them, first time is me talking second time is forest service. It's my livelihood, be exactly the same as an electrician renting a building for his office paying the insurance, rent, utilities and then having a competitor come in and put a desk right by the front door and cutting their prices in half. We do charge a premium for packing, but the cost of our gear, feed, shoes, packers and wear and tear on everything we have to cover, plus insurance, permits, all that. And we gotta feed and keep horses year round, we
Don't just feed them when they are used.

In Nevada outfitters will not pack your meat or anything else for that matter unless you hire them to guide your hunt. There is a liability deal that makes them not want to be involved.

That sucks, we have our clients sign our contract that outlines all the same stuff that a guided hunt, drop camp, or spike camp hunt would involve liability wise.

Ya there are some needless laws that are virtually unenforceable. This is one of them. Nobody cares about this. You'll find plenty of ranchers, outfitters and fun riders in most areas in every state that can and will help out for reasonable "tips". If anyone complains just ignore them.

Agreed, especially when outfitters won't/can't assist you. I don't like the idea of stepping on toes and would prefer to use an outfitter.

Not realistic, but would be nice to have an updated list of packers by unit.
