So who is planning on hunting the high country for Muleys this year? Always fun to see who is getting to chase these guys come the end of summer.

I usually plan on it during the muzzle loader hunts here in Colorado.

However in a couple of units I have found better bucks down in the timber and oak brush than what I have seen up high. Then there is the other unit where all the big buck stay up high on the private while all the hunters sit down on the BLM just looking at them.

Plan A and B will be for high country bucks in September. I can’t wait for July to come so I can find out what caliber of bucks we’ll be chasing in September.

Loveland, CO. was AZ.
Planning on scouting high country for mule deer come summer. As of today, not sure if I will try for an archery tag or rifle in the draw. Hopefully something comes my way this coming year... best to all chasing.

Thanks to Bob Swinehart, Dwight Schuh and South Cox, every year since 2003. A recurve in hand with Flemish twist string and not a road hunter (or a road) in sight. Scouting at this point has become nothing more than seeing what bucks made it through the winter and an excuse to get a milkshake in Fields.

Good luck everybody.

If you look back 2 years ago I posted I will never do this again...........but I'm not smart and think I can pull it off.

I'm gonna spend the entire archery season in camp with an either sex elk archery tag and a buck mule deer tag. I'll hunt two complete drainages and try and get it done again.

I burned my 10 CO deer pts. last year, and will have to go for a 100% draw MZL area. Fortunately, I have an area where I did take a good buck several years ago, but there were few deer spotted and it is brutal to access. But, that's what makes it interesting for me, and I avoided even seeing other hunters for a week in an area with a lot of tags. My toughest challenge is that my wife is voicing stronger concerns about my doing these trips solo, but whenever I set up a trip with others it is always a big compromise.

Idk. Decisions, decisions. Its on my short list of options for this fall. [emoji2]

If I convince myself point creep isn't too bad and tag allocations go up a skosh, I might just go for it. Just need to keep an ear for how they made it thru the winter in some of the ranges that interest me as the application deadlines approach. I saw enough last summer while fishing in the high country streams to take note. [emoji383] and [emoji355] realities can only support 1 western hunt/season.

Thanks for sharing the pics!

Regards,

I will be up high bow in hand this year and unless we see a big weather pattern change the passes will be opening up early this year. That should make for a early start to the scouting season. Been a very dry and warm winter thus far the deer I see are fat and happy. Even with this winter overall deer numbers are still down overall. Living around it just felt like it and reciently talked with a freind who shed hunts on private land and has picked up 24 so far this year it is his lowest year since 2010 and just below half of his normal. Again he looks over the same private ground on the winter range every year.

There are a few bucks I too hope to see return once the green arrives to the high country. Last year saw a few in the almost there range like the buck below and I would think a couple made the winter.

Next year I should have enough points to get into a good area for High country Rifle.

Combined with an Elk hunt ! Any thoughts as to if Special App is needed ? Is the extra money needed to draw general tags ?

We'll see what other tags I draw. Last year I could only spend a long weekend up there and with the shitty weather I didn't get to hunt as long as I wanted. If I don't draw anything else I'd like to spend a week in the high country. Only have so many vacation days

Have you guys seen a large increase in high country hunters over the past few years? Guys in "your area"? Seems to be getting a lot more popular among hunters...

I was thinking about this the other day. They say that the total number of hunters is going down but obviously (i.e. Point creep) the demand for western big game hunts is going up. Is it that more people are traveling to hunt? People more willing to spend money on hunting?
