I just found out this morning that I drew Unit 14A for the 2014 season archery hunt! I am pretty excited, but have never spent any time in that unit. I would love any advice anyone is willing to share on where to find good bucks.

I will be hunting with my brother and our 2 sons (age 10 & 11).

If anyone can narrow the unit down for me, I would greatly appreciate it!

In addition, I might be willing to pay a trespass fee for access to private land (if anyone knows a landowner in the area) depending on what animals were there and how much the landowner wanted for access of course.

I would prefer to hunt public lands though, I am just wanting to really give the boys a chance to see some bucks, and feel like they are a part of the hunt.

Anyway -- thanks in advance for any help!

Yeah, I guess i fell right into that trap.

Not really expecting anyone to invite me right into their tree stand with them, just any general info is helpful!

Cheers,

Dark

Thats the one thing I dont care about this forum, is that they dont like newbies to join and ask a question. I had no idea about this forum until i did a search on a unit I drew and then I found this forum. It has been great, but I hate all the "if youre new, wait to ask" .

Any how, I like Unit 14A. Down by Montecello. It a great place with lots of deer. We unted it archery a few years ago and had a blast. I wish my group would go back, but its a long ways from Northern Utah. Go West out of Montecello and you will do just fine. THere are a few canyons we hunted and saw some studs. I think spring Canyon is the name. Its the head waters of the creek. But get high and dont be afraid to get off the atv's and hike. Lots of bears too. So be careful.

Not exactly... there's no "wait" period before you can ask a question. This place is a community (although growing) where guy's get to know each other and share in their experiences along with helping each other out. Do you have any idea how many guy's join every year (this forum and others) only to try and get knowledge on there up coming hunt? Lots (not all) get what they want and are never to be heard from again. It's not supposed to work like that. It should be a two way street. I know most guy's on here are more than willing to help out any way they can and deserve more respect than the typical dine and dash.

Case in point... awhile back a brand spanking new poster comes on asking for info on the once in a lifetime tag he drew. I saw his posts as a first time user on other forums too. He almost seemed put out that he wasn't getting the information he was looking for. Like he was somehow entitled to it. I tried helping him and a few others helped out too. Guess what? I haven't seen him back on here helping anyone else out. So now you see the other side.

No ones saying "don't ask"... they're just saying join in and don't take the info and run! Darkphage, I wish you well on your hunt. I'm sure you will get some info from all the great resources here.

Thanks CoHi,

As for my ability to help anyone else out, I have hunted the Pavahant range in Utah for 25 years. I can narrow down anyones trophy elk hunt a lot. And I have spent almost 30 days hunting the famed Paunsaugunt for both Archery & Rifle. Please let me help anyone with questions. I am pretty confident there as well.

I am mostly hoping to find help on 14A for where I might find bucks that I could arrow from a tree stand, or an out of the way spring that I could take my 9 year old to, and let him see what this is all about.

Anyway, I appreciate all who've contributed so far, and will readily admit that I completely understand where CoHi is coming from. I'm more excited about bowhunting than I have been in a while, and didn't really think before I spoke (or posted in this case). I'm sure all are guilty of that at one time or another!

Thanks in Advance,

Dark

We dont mind new guys asking questions, but we do appreciate an introduction and hope you stick around. There are alot of new guys that make 1 post asking for info and we try to help them and never even get a thank you which can be a bit frustrating to guys that are on here regularly.

Hey guys we are here to help the new guys to the forum as well as the old guys. I does get very old have new guys join to just ask where do I hunt. But we are here to help. Go to the new members section give an intro. Do a few searches and see what you can find. Chances are your question as already been asked. Show alittle interest in the forum and that your not just going to bail when you get the info your looking for.

Good luck on your hunt and I think it's great your taking the kids along for the hunt. I don't have any info to share for Utah. Sorry.

I hunted 14A for the first time last yr on the Archery hunt and went into the area a bit blind. Did however see a lot of deer. Not a lot of big bucks but some decent ones. This area is tough to hunt. Its steep! and there are a lot of ATV trails. Most of the bucks we seen were up high and away from the traffic. I will absolutely second the statement about a lot of bears! We seen bears everyday it seemed like. I was fortunate to draw this tag again this yr and will still be learning the area. Its a great hunt weather you get a deer or not. Lots of elk in this unit also. I believe you can purchase an OTC cow/spike tag for this unit. Wouldn't be a bad option to keep the kids interested if not seeing a lot of deer.

Thanks NM,

There must be a lot of bears for 2 people to mention it. It looks like the main roads get hit really hard with ATV riders, this unit seems to have a lot of hunters for the amount of high country it has. Has anyone hunted out in the desert around the area?

Thanks,

Dark

Took me a bit to remember were 14A is. I have ML hunted it a few times. We used to hunt up pretty high. Some years there were quite a few deer, others not so many. Missed a nice buck 1 year. I havent gone for a few years but reports from friends that have havent been very good recently. It is great country and I do hope to hunt it again someday, its just at kind of a bad time of year for me since I moved to WA.

I'll second MM's post about the deer being up high, but I've noticed once they strip the velvet the 1st week or so of September they seem to fall off the peaks down into the Aspen/Conifer patch's. I'd hunt the start of the season if I was you!

An old guy I used to hunt there with said he saw 54 bucks on opening morning once in the 60's in that area. Said there were so many he didnt even know what one to shoot. Must have been a nice problem to have!
