Can some kind person explain to me the advantages of applying as a group for tags? I understand the disadvantages but not the other way around. I would assume those advantages would be the same for every state so its a general question. Thanks

It is simple, one draws all draw. But instead of 4 applications it is just 1 application and the points are either rounded down for a average or they take the lowest number of points that a applicant has to enter the draw.

Different states do it a little different but basically they are all the same.

Right. It really pays to know how points are handled on group applications in each state.

The advantage to a group application is that if you have a group of four guys who want to go, they all either get drawn or no one gets drawn, so you don't split up the group.

But, in some states, maybe most (not Wyoming), if a group's number of applicants is higher than the available tags at that point in the draw, no one draws. That is why it is foolish to apply for sheep or goat as a group and some states will not even allow it. But, for any species and area that has few tags allotted for nonresidents or in states with a very low nonresident cap like Oregon or California, it is better to apply as two people to a group.

In Wyoming the lowest point person would get the advantage in a group app. We average our points so they would get the benefit of averaging with higher point folks. And yes Wyoming will give tags to everyone in the group even if it puts the tags over the allotted quota.

Or if you are superstitious, putting with a youth in the party might give you some good juju.

So basically the group counts as a single draw but all would get tags?? That's what I'm understanding.

Also some states have it where if one tag holder turns his tag back in all of you need to turn your tags back in.

Here's a chart I made up on how states handle group applications. It is part of a big chart I did in 2016 for an EHJ article called, "Understanding the Draw." You'll have to zoom in to see it well since I can't get it to show any bigger.

Thanks for that and I'll keep it for the future. Unfortunately you didn't work on the state I'm heading to but definitely appreciate you posting it.

Wyoming does not combine party apps into a single application. They are given the same random number but remain individual apps in the system. Where it makes a difference is in reading and understanding the demand report. Specifically, 1st choice applicants and tag allocation columns.
A party of 6 will always show as 6 first choice applicants, and the allocated qty will never be more than those 1st choice apps.

Gotcha, thanks.
