Griz and a Bright idea ??

All, I carry a small pocket sized strobe or rescue light with my kit when hunting big country, for obvious reasons. I was wondering if they would be helpful in keeping Griz, and other predators off the kill if I had to leave an animal overnight? Or do you all think it would bring them in to the animal?

I dont want to ring more dinner bells tan I have to !

Great question. I wonder what the out come will be? It sure could be a deterrent.

In my experience it does not help..during my guiding years, we used everything you could imagine to try and deter bears from getting on kills overnight when we had to leave them. From lights and strobes, to Halloween things that made noise and screamed. In the end we just quit trying, and hoped a bear wouldn't be there in the morning because none of those devices made any difference

Sounds like a good idea. However, if it doesn't work it doesn't work. There might be something that does? Humm

Watched a program on Discovery called "Last Alaskans" and one of them shot a moose along a river. Had to leave the meat O/N, built a big, smoky fire, said the smoke helped keep the bears away. Probably a pretty dangerous thing to do in our forests.

Best idea of heard is to leave an old smelling t-shirt or draws near the meat in hopes the human scent will help deter. But NOT on it!

when an animal wants your carcass, they usually get it.
I was only gone three hours, cougar not bear.

I am not sure that helps. I was in northern bc working on a stone sheep and the guide goes grab your rifle. I was thinking, why I already shot the animal, then he pointed and a grizz was coming towards us. The smell of the meat was more powerful than the smell of humans. We stood up and waved our arms, and shouted. that bear did a 360 so fast I thought he was going to trip over himself. I can still see that bear almost piling up in the creek that ran thru the middle of the bowl, he was moving so fast to get out of there.

On the same trip we got to charge a young boar grizz to try and teach it some respect of humans. It was fun to charge them, versus the opposite. We where on horses when we charged. that bear just ran and ran and ran.
