Was looking for any info on Wyoming deer area 144. Pretty confident I will draw this year with 6 PP. Wondering if I would be better off going opening of season or later in the season. Also, is the southern half of the unit better than the northern half? Thanks for any info you can provide.

All that country is good, no magic spots in the greys. Can't help you with time of season I've always hunted the opener but I'm not sure it's the best time.

I've been up there on opener and people were everywhere but where I went. Lol. I have also been there during the last week and there was hardly anyone anywhere. Most people will pull out of the early deer hunts come October because so many other units open up on October 1st.

Thanks Ridgerunner. I am leaning toward the northern end of the unit and the last ten days of the season.

Season ends on October 7th. Might consider going 2 days earlier so ya can have full 10 days hunting. Or just use 8 and 9th to recoupe and relax. Good luck on your hunt.

Thanks. Couldn't remember if the season ended 7th or 9th. Either way I have 10 days to hunt. Last time I hunted the Greys was in 1994. Was a lot younger then!

I drew the tag! Now the planning begins. Going over my maps for the area trying to narrow it down to a couple of drainages. Going Sept. 22-Oct.2. Haven't really decided on a specific area yet. I have heard the southern part of area 144 is better hunting than the northern half but also more hunters. does anyone have any thought on this? I have e-mailed Yellowstone horse rentals three times about renting horses but have not heard back from them. Are they still in business? Is there anyone else who might rent horses? Thanks in advance for any help.

We use to hunt the head of the Greys River area for many years and rented horses from Monte something but can't remember last name. If you google horse rental in Afton Wyoming you will get several names.

Yellowstone bought Monte's deal a while back..wyoming horses are good, but they are in pavilion whereas Yellowstone is located right there in the middle of G. Chad Madsen is who does all the hauling and scheduling etc...I'm sure he is busy as hell this time of year like he usually is getting rentals out to ranches all over wyoming and elsewhere..They aren't much for computers of you know what I mean. .you gonna be a lot better off calling them direct to get answers. They own 1,500 head of horses, so you gotta realize they are very busy during summer just as much as in the fall. They are great people, just give them a call
