GPS Sale Question

Cabala's is running a sale on the Garmin Oregon 650T for $369.99
Regular price is around $550. I know there are tons of treads on basic GPS issues on the forum, but my questions are of a different nature?

1. Is this a good sale price or should I keep looking? From what I've seen, it seems good.
2. Is it safe to assume maps can be added to this unit even though it comes loaded with basic maps. The state maps have much more details, but if I want to add the state maps, I do not need to buy the "T" version, but if the price is very good, then it still makes sense, right...?

Thanks guys!

if it has a spot for an sd card, and id be shocked if it didn't, then you can add whatever you want. yeah that's a pretty sweet price for that model but have to as your self if you need all the bells and whistles or would you do just fine with an Oregon 450 at half that cost?

The sale price is good. The T version is Topo included, hunt on X chips come with it. I have the Oregon 600 and I think I paid 300. They are very easy to use and operate. I can't remember is the screen bigger on the T version?. Good luck.

I have an Oregon 600, which I believe is almost the same as the 650. The place for the sd card is under the batteries. Take the batteries out and you can see where it goes.

Thanks for pointing this sale out! I may have to upgrade my failing etrex. I am wondering what makes the Montana so much more expensive then the Oregon? Also has anyone tried the birdseye imaging on the mentioned GPS on sale the Oregon 650t? Looks like it could make for a nice combination.

I believe the biggest reason being the larger screen size. However, the Oregon seems to be more than adequate.

I made the purchase last night! Now time to figure it out.
CC: I also had the $20 off coupon. Came in handy last night as I purchased new rain gear and my Mountain House meals for 9 days!
I am stoked!!

I have the Montana 650t, the preloaded topos do not even begin to compare with the ON X MAPS. After using the ON X MAPS I would not go out in the field without them. The Montana has a larger screen which makes viewing easier and you have more room to zoom out and get a better overall look at the lay of the land. Heavier though and bulkier. God bless

I also have the 650t and the one thing I wish I didn't have was the T map pre loaded. When I use it in steep terrain with imagery all I can really see is the topo lines when zoomed in versus actually imagery. On-x maps are amazing and def worth the investment

You can turn the topi map off or disable it in your maps settings.

BC: I ordered the same GPS, and should get it tomorrow. :) I'm interested to see how well I like the pre-loaded topo maps or if I should spend the $100 for the on X maps. The 8MP camera will be nice to have also.
If you are looking for public land overlays I can walk you through a map download that is absolutely free. And it is available for most western states.

The other difference in the T versions is larger internal memory. 4gb I believe vs 1.5gb for the non T version. You can replace the basemap with a different one if you want to.

Yes, definitely need some better maps than what is already on the 650t.

Hoytfanatic: Its tempting to download the free maps, but sounds like the on X maps give more detail (correct me if I'm wrong). I'll probably just bite the bullet and spend the $100. I appreciate the offer though. Thanks!
I have not seen the hunt x maps, but I'm fairly certain that they are all gathered from the same free maps and just put into a useable format. No problem though the ease of use is definitely a reason to pay!

The 650T is a good unit. I also have onX map they are great. Also put it on the lap top and you can see a lot at one time.

When I got my 450t I was not looking for the t but it was on sale at Cabelas too. Im glad I got the t now because if I hunt a state I dont have or dont really need a chip for it is really nice to have the preloaded maps. They are not as good as the maps on the chip but they are all you really need in alot of areas if public/private land boundaries are not a concern.
