Curious to hear how other glass a large area. I start with a good scan of the area with the naked eye before moving to binoculars. Then I try to break areas down as if there was a grid starting lower left and progressively glassing back and forth working further from my location. I have done much better with this technique than just randomly looking.

If it's an area I know well naked eye is first. Then move to more detailed view.

I do it very similar to you Hilltop. Once I start with glass I look close first. I have been surprised a couple times because I started far and they were right under my nose.

I used the grid technique many time this past couple weeks to find bedded bucks. Once I run through an area with the binos I get comfortable, set up the spotter and spend a lot of time looking in every shady pocket, beside big rocks and under trees. It works out very well.
