I know I've posted before about the aliments we all suffer as we get older, but I couldn't let this just pass with out my comments. Had 2 total shoulder replacements 3 years ago that made me feel 30 years younger. Full range of motion and no pain, just issues with lack of strength from favoring the shoulder for years.

About 6 months ago I started having pain in my left shoulder, Ortho Doc said I had a minor rotator cuff tear. During my Alaska trip in June, I tore the right one too...only worse. Doing some pt now and am putting off surgery until after I get back from my Wyoming hunt in Oct.

I'll be 78 pretty soon....what's next!

I was sitting in a bar once talking to a gentleman that was around 20 years older than I was at the time. He made of of the best statements that I have ever heard concerning his health.

He said that if he knew that he was going to live to be this old he would of taken better care of his body when he was younger.

I think that we all are guilty of this one way or another. How many sprained ankles did you walk off when you were playing sports? How often did you injure yourself in one way or another and just let it go, figuring that it was alright and really didn't hurt that much.

I know that I am as guilty and most of us are, and am now paying for it as I get older. I can't bend over, crawl around on my knees or do a lot of things that I took for granted years ago. And I am only 66, but I am paying for all the fun that I had one way or another.

CC , I feel your pain. I'm only 69 and after a major back surgery two years ago I just can't seem to bounce back. My legs get jittery when I start up a steep hill and just don't have the stamina anymore. Guess our parts are just wearing out. I'll be hunting the Wyoming sage country this fall for my buck instead of the high country. I can't get too far off the road as I'm only supposed to lift up to 25 lbs. Still, I'm looking forward to this hunt. Just being out there will be great even if I take my tag home.

I hear you....I played college football at a major big time university (was a linebacker). As a result I have the shoulder replacements, a total knee and an ankle replacement. If I had it to do over, I would have played golf!

Four years ago I started walking every AM> Getting ready for a Javelina hunt in very rough terrain.
Walking went to jogging, for about a week...Then I heard a pop in my left knee,no problem.
1 block to go so I didn't stop.Never went to the doctor, which I should have had surgery.
2yrs later after self re-habing,finally made my hunt.Knee still bothers me,after hearing your
stories I,m sorry I didn,t take a different route and "Bucked Up" and had the surgery.

Only 35 here but between motocross and HS sports I was rough on my body. I have a mostly fused left wrist with 2 screws in it, 16 screws in my right hand, along with a broken right collar bone and lower left arm. Im now back into better shape than I was while I was racing and playing sports at twice the age but the lil nagging aches and pains from those days show up frequently. Hopefully the last 5 yrs of doing things right help in the long haul.

Compared to you CC, I'm just a kid (67 in a couple weeks). It worked to my advantage that I wasn't much of an athlete...always a participant but not a competitor. My older neighbor has had 2 knees and 1 hip replaced, and he missed on one hunt due to the last hip replacement. He is suffering with his other hip now but has his surgery scheduled after the antelope hunt in late Sept. When I was 37 and running my final full marathon, an 86 year old man passed me a block from the finish line. I know he was 86 because there was a story in the paper the next day about him running a marathon in all 50 states that year. There are some remarkable people out there Roger, and you are definitely among them.

As for hunting shortly after a joint replacement, I have a friend who drew a cow elk tag a few years ago. And yep, he needed to have one of his hips replaced about a week before the hunt. Instead of crying the blues and turning in his tag another friend took him out and set him up in a comfortable lawn chair at the far end of a meadow where a road crossed it. He set him up with the lawn chair, a umbrella, and a cooler, all withing arms reach. He also had his rifle and a 2 way radio. Well the first couple days came and went with the only thing being seen being deer and small animals. On the third day he saw a couple of elk but they were too far away to shoot. The fourth day he shot a yearling cow elk just after sunrise. He got onto the radio and said that he needed some help.

It just goes to show that if you want to do something you can and should go and do it.

Hey CC, as an engineer you should know the answer to your question of "what's next?" is 79 !!
You're doing great and you're an inspiration to us young guys (I'm only 61).
Just keep on getting out there !!
Like my grandfather told me once, "Getting old ain't for sissies!"
I hope your shoulder starts feeling better(y)

I'm nipping at your heels Cowboy. I had neck fusion surgery, right knee replacement (now the left needs replacing) and I need both shoulders replaced. I'm 72 this year. Didn't draw a tag so I'm fishing this fall I guess. Maybe buy a General Deer tag.

Being 41 I hope that when I get be 60 and 70 I am still able to get out on the mountains like some of you that already posted on this thread. That being said being in the Army has put some wear and tear on my body with 3 knee surgeries and 4 ankle surgeries. Also have neck and back issues that I am trying to fix with physical therapy, I really don't want to do those surgeries. If I am lucky 4 more years in Army to get to 20 years and then I can retire and just ease my way up and down the mountains, still getting were I need to go just not as fast as I used be.;)

I'm 20 years ahead of you in age and also did the Army thing for 27 years (Ranger school in 1980) etc, etc.
I have lot's of aches and pains but I can still get 'er done … and I'm sure you'll be able to also.
You nailed it with "... still getting were I need to go just not as fast as I used to be."

CC,
Here's and interesting article titled;
"Surgery vs physical therapy for rotator cuff tears"
I hope the link works.
