Hey Y’all, I'm a new member here from the flat-lands of coastal Georgia. When I was young, I got to spend some time during the summer around Cimarron when we would go to Philmont in northeast New Mexico. While there we spent a lot of time riding the back roads looking for elk, mule deer, antelope and bear. Ever since then I’ve wanted to head back out west for a hunt. Now that I’m older and have the funds, I want to start planning a trip and that’s what led me here. Most of my hunting to date has been hunting out a tree stand for whitetails here in coastal Georgia, where a 180lb deer is big. My goals for the next few months are to start researching and planning a trip. So I will be posting here and reading posts trying to get a feel for what I need to make the trip back west, but this time it would be for a hunt. So any advice for someone like me I am all ears.

Welcome Southern Engineer. The easiest way to guarantee a tagin NM is to purchase a landowner permit rather than enter the public draw.
From what I've looked into it would be a while before the NM hunt. I've been looking into more toward Colorado or Idaho.

are you certain on what your going for first?
I would like to go for elk, but possibly mule deer for the first hunt. Either would be fine with me, my hunts would be public land DIY.
