Hey guys. I have hunted Colorado over the counter several times with my dad, and I will be again this fall. In 2019, my dad and I are going to head to Wyoming. We each will have 3 points so we should have no problem drawing General tags. Our plan is to have one of us draw in 2019 and the other will draw in 2020. That way we can hunt the same area 2 years in a row and hunt together the whole time.

We have narrowed our hunting area down to a unit with a backup unit next to it. We will be hunting diy, so we are limited to non wilderness areas. I have no problem tell you which units, but I know some people don?t like displaying that if it turns out that is the unit they hunt. We will be North East of Jackson, Wyoming, and I have located a few areas within my unit that I think look good. If anyone is familiar I will send a PM with more specifics on the areas I like in order to get some feedback and some opinions. (I?m not the most experienced elk hunter).

I do have some specific questions for the general public.
1) If I can get 2 weeks off work, we are thinking the 7-21 and if I can only get a week or so off we are thinking the 14-21. What do you think about those dates for General Elk Archery?
2) in Colorado where we hunt, we are right about tree line. Around 11,000+. This mountain peaks and ridge tops in that area are 13k and 12k respectively. Q - is that about this distance away from the mountain and ridge tops you would reccomend working?
3) I know they like north facing slopes, do you reccomend them being the main ridges as E-W ridges with a very large north facing slope. Or for example a N-S main ridge, with small fingers or small drainages that run E-W causing small NORTH facing slopes? Or is that way too specific and I should just go and figure it out?
5) In Colorado we have done both backpacking deep in a specific area and staying by a vehicle and being mobile. In this area, do you find several concentrated pockets of elk, or large herds? My question relates to the tactic we decide to go with. If I need to stay mobile and be able to jump in to several spots then I need to hunt off the road. If there are little pockets of just a few elk, then backpacking might not be bad because I can probably run into a few wherever I go.
6) any other tips you have let me know. If you want to keep it private, PM me.

Yea I know. I was hoping that the presence of Grizzly Bears would help keep some people out of the area and would give us more of the place to ourselves. If you think this is a wrong move, let me know.
Your logic is sound but hunting in that country does create more work to keep safe. As long as you are prepared to go through the extra work ( hanging food in trees, super clean camp, etc ) it's not the wrong move. There is some great elk hunting in that country. I personally don't care to hunt Griz country so can't offer you any specifics on the areas you want to hunt.

Definitely. We always hang our stuff and go through the necessary precautions to stay safe. We will each have bear spray

I am not the person to ask about hunting in grizz country, I try to stay out of it, lol.
These guys on here can give you some sound advice. Kind of freaked me out to find out our cow bison hunts would have grizz considerations. We heed the advice of those who live and hunt that country often.

If you are hunting togwotee area.. you will be in grizzly central. And there are still plenty of residents and outfitters who hunt all over that area. If you are up gros ventre... it gets hit hard by hunters both resident and non. . you will not be hunting above treeline in any of those areas, cause unlike Colorado we are obviously not 12k'+, so trees will run all the way to the top of most ridges and peaks.. you will find elk anywhere from valley bottom to the top, not really a specific elevation out here that they prefer.. if togwotee region is where you are thinking of going, id highly suggest getting electric fence for your camp. Every year there are bad encounters between hunters and bears up there

Thanks for the grizzly bear information. We are looking at unit 81 with 83 as a second choice.

Hey Guys. So I have been doing a lot of research on the two units I was looking at, 81 and 83.

I have one other thought. I have 3 points now, so I will have 4 points in the draw in January. unit 67,68,and 69 have a joint type 9 tag. Unit 67 and 69 have considerable wilderness area. Unit 68, however, is not wilderness. (going diy) Does anyone have experience with 68 that knows 83 or 81 as well and wouldn't mind comparing? It looks like 68 has easier access to hunt than 83 and 81, which is a good thing for bowhunting I think. My dad and I are not afraid of backpacking in grizzly country, and we are simply looking to kill any bull. I don't care about trophy potential, just success and a good hunt.

I saw it has a general bowhunt the second half of September, which is usually more toward the rut? Any thoughts on that is appreciated also.

Questions I have:

1) How are the main gravel roads? Do they get washed out bad? We have a 1/2 ton van that we have used to hunt out of before, but it is not 4-wheel drive. We also have a truck w/ 4-wheel drive that we could take.
2)Is this open to 4-wheelers and side by sides to run any trail? We were not planning on bringing one, but I just dont want to hike a mile into an area and get passed by someone in a 4-wheeler.
3) There was a big burn in the area recently. How is the vegetation coming back and is it worth hunting or staying out of?
4) Between the two units, which do you feel would be the best for strictly finding elk? Ie which is best for glassing, bugling, ect. Really just looking for a shot at any elk.

Any other information on the area is greatly greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joey
