Just got back from bear hunting and took a chocolate black bear over bait. It was a smaller bear, 1st one for me and in an area with 2 tags allowed. The F&G are trying to reduce bear populations, so I wasn't too concerned about harvesting a small one.
We baited 5 sites throughout the week, refreshing sites and sitting on some baits that were hit. We used apples, honey, pellets, stale donuts, etc., that were kept in the truck. After sitting on a bait for a couple of hours, we left the site with plenty of daylight left. As we were hiking back to the truck, we noticed a bear circling the truck and it finally jumped in the bed of the truck. We decided to watch the bear to make sure it wasn't with cubs and walked to within 20 yards of the bear.
The bear stood up on it's hind legs and one quick shot to the neck dropped it in the bed of the truck. That was the shortest haul of game I've ever done!
The picture shows where it dropped.
