All,
I am hunting with a rookie this year and want him to be as prepared as possible. In my mind that means knowing the anatomy of elk, and being comfortable with the size of the animal.
Does anyone know where I can find full sized -life sized paper elk targets ? Just so we don"t go there, I am not creative enough to draw them myself .... Unless we wanted Zombie or disabled elk targets !

If you don't find any go down to a appliance store and get a cardboard box from one of their refrigerators. Then you can make your own from a picture of a elk.

I have always wondered why nobody has marketed something like this. I have a printer client. Took him a picture, we messed with the dimensions until it was about right. He printed on some heavy duty material (like you see on youth sports banners). Had him overlap the edges so it left a loop on each side. $2 of PVC and you have a life size target. Couple pieces of rebar to slide PVC in and throw bag target behind it. Easily lasts 1,000 arrows.elk-target.jpg

I have shopped for them in the past and had no luck. Making your own isn't as difficult as it may seem- even if you're no artist. Buy a large piece of cardboard or get a used one as mentioned above. I have made them from large cardboard in the past. Measure out dimensions on the box- about 27" from top of back to bottom of brisket, 7.5' from nose to tail, and about 5' tall at the shoulder. If you rough sketch these out after measuring a basic outline is pretty easy to come up with. After you have a rough sketch, use spray paint to darken the outlines and rough in the shoulder and hindquarter lines and the image really will take shape. At 300 yards you will be amazed how good it looks. I have tan circle stickers I use to cover bullet holes so I can use a target for quite a while before trashing it. I make one every time I draw an elk permit and plan to rifle hunt. Very fun practice and really builds confidence.
