From Casper to Shoshoni

I submitted my application today for deer unit 34. We probably have a good shot at drawing. I have recieved both good and bad reviews on the deer herd there, but we decided to go for it anyhow. We are camping on BLM land and I have a 2 options for camps right now, working on a 3rd and 4th incase the spots are taken, or they just don't work out for one reason or another. We will basically be camping/hunting in the North Western portion of the unit towards region Y.

Now to the question.....20/26 from Casper to Shoshoni is the southern border of 34. Is there gas or a conv store on that route? Like in Powder River, Natrona, Arminto ect....

If not, the closest one I can find is Lysite which according to Google Maps is 1 hour and 49 minutes away from our Option A camp site.

IS there gas to be had on the southern portion of region Y that may be closer?

I plan on taking three 5 gallon jugs with me, but we may need more than that if there isn't anything closer. We will be up there for 8-9 days.

While I am on the subject of length of stay......what do you guys/gals do with the capes of the deer and antelope while in the filed for so long? Dry Ice and packed in coolers with the meat?

Thanks in advance for any tips.....

I think that either Waltman or Hiland have some fuel pumps. I'll be traveling that route tomorrow, so I'll keep an eye out and get back to you.

Waltman has a small gas station/conv store and I also think Powder River has one too. Powder river has a post office and is a "larger" stopping place. I have a friend in Waltman and I think they do some shopping in Powder River. There is a store & gas station in Lost cabin, north of Moneta. It has quite a few groceries too.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks to both of you!!

I called the Powder River Post Office haha....she was very helpful and nice. Said the closest fuel is in Hilman WY. It's still an hour and 15 minutes from where we want to camp, but that's betther than 2 hours. The gas station in PR is closed, as is the food joint. Too bad, it looked like my kind of place too. Looked at it on Googel Earth street view and they are both boarded up and ran down.

Kepp me posted Libid if you don't mind. We will be traveling up Arminto road to the mountains more than likely. If not, 33 mile road on the casper side is an option. it just looks like it would be a better route to go up through Arminto....less side road on that route compared to traveling all the way up NW on 33 mile rd from Casper.

33 mile rd is technically a road, but man it was rough last fall.
I heard about that haha.....Apparently the further NW you get, the worse it becomes. I will be ordering chains I guess, and I'll have an ATV in tow as bad as I hate it. I really didn't want to get an ATV involved.

Lost Cabin is a lot closer than 1 1/2 hors from PR and Waltman. The last time I was the (a couple of years ago) the small market w/gas pumps was going strong due to all the drilling and pipeline work.

I thought I remembered Powder River being closed up when I went through there in 12. Seems like I saw fuel someplace in that area but I cant say where exactly.

Thanks CC, I seen lost cabin road there. Followed it on the map all the way over to LC. It is a good little trek, but looks like a decent road.

MM...Hilman is east of Waltman and has fuel. That's what the PO lady told me today though. So you're probably right. Thanks!!

Where is Hilman? I see Hiland which is west of Waltman but I dont see Hiland on the map. I have never been from Moneta to Waltman on the hwy because I was out on backroads.

I'm gonna be in the same boat Cobb, I'll be close to you (hopefully) chasing antelope in Unit 67. I've got to find some places with supplies. I'll be out there scouting a couple times this summer. Hopefully I can get a plan in order.

Now that I counted the chickens before they hatched, I'll get skunked.

I'm sure you'll do fine! I'm putting a roof rack on my 4Runner and bringing a metric ton of sh&* with me. My biggest concern is the size of the fuel tank in my runner. 16 gallons. That presents a potential problem.
