Hi everyone. New to the forum and was wondering if anyone on here has hunted Antelope areas 71, 50 or 42. Had no preference points and those were my choices in that order. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I will be ordering a Wyoming Delorme Gazeteer and possibly a GPS to use on our hunt. Hoping to be able to hunt Walk In Only and Hunter Management areas or pay a reasonable trespass fee.

I hunted unit 50 last year, just north east of Elk Mountain. The drought and previous winter had bad effects on the number of goats. I still saw quite a few. This unit is not a trophy unit. I hunted 3 straight days, dusk til dawn and shot the biggest buck I found, 13 inches. The ranch I hunted last year isn't even letting people hunt due to the poor numbers. Lots and lots of private ground in unit 50.

Hi Bigsky. I am not familiar with those units, but great draw odds for Wyoming antelope (100% with no points) is almost always an indicator of minimal public land. Just make sure you do your homework and actually have a place to hunt. Each of the units you have listed is noted as an "Area With Difficult Public Access" in the Wyoming hunting regulations.

Thanks guys, I ended up changing all of my choices and last night met a guy who guides in Wyoming and he gave me more useful info in case I don't get drawn, as far as units that usually have leftover tags and accessible land. :D

It is getting harder to get access in Wyoming but if you start early and are persistent you can still find access in leftover units.

Big sky I did the exact same thing last year as you are talking about I went into unit 42 totally blind never even being in wy before. I had one of the funniest hunts I've ever had. Best advice I can give is buy the hunting maps chip for wy it makes it very clear where you can and can't hunt. I will be going back again this year hopefully!

Hey PREDATOR, thanks for the post. Didn't get drawn this year. Also I just realized I had the opportunity to purchase a preference point along with my license..only a few months too late. Hope you drew a tag and have fun. Just bought points for both deer and 'lope so here's to next fall ;)

It wouldn't have mattered if you had bought the PP earlier with your license because it's not good until the draw the following year.

You can buy points until Sep. 30th. Since you were not successful in the draw you should be able to purchase a point now. I would give it a shot.
