I'd like to start planning a 2020 Mtn Goat hunt. Whose done it? Where did you go? OTC Tags? Outfitter? Cost? Lets hear it.

We have some goats in Alaska but non-residents are required to hire a guide. Some area's you need to draw a tag for, some you don't. The drawing period is going on right now until December 17th.

The cost can have a wide range depending on the hunt you're looking for. If you are interested in coming to Alaska to hunt them, send me a P.M. and I can recommend some guides.

Alaska and BC mtn goat hunts start at around $11k and go up (if you go guided). There are a number of Western States that offer super tough draw tags that likely take a lifetime to draw. There's a wide range of hunting styles depending upon the location. Some may be spot and stalk from a boat. Others may be horseback or backpack. I know some units in Colo where you can drive an ATV or truck right up to goats. I've been on over a dozen different goat hunts with family and friends. They are literally a blast!

Went 2 years ago in Nevada on a draw hunt for my hunting partner. Took him 19 years to draw.

We went diy, did lots of research and found a good goat on the first day after 2 days of snow. It was one of the most physically hunts I’ve ever been on. At least the pack out wasn’t bad vs elk.

Good Optics is a must and be as fit as you possible can.

You might consider a combo hunt in BC, I'd look in northern BC. The Wild Sheep Show is a great place to meet outfitters. PM me if you'd like, I have a Great outfitter in Northern BC. I've done a combo hunt, but moose was my primary animal.

I've done two goat huntsi. One was in BC 2011 and the other WY Resident tag 2015. The BC hunt wad guided. The WY DIY. I'd definitely look at AK or BC. I went with Bolen & Lewis in BC. There success rate is almost 100%. I would recommend Lonesome Dove outfitter Dennis Zada. He runs a great outfit. These hunts are well north of $12k.

I did both of mine with a bow. Good Luck!

My avatar is my BC goat.

I am leaning towards Unit 6 Alaska, and hiring Pacific Mountain Guides out of Valdez, AK. Anyone know about them and/or this Unit?

The mountain goat hunt that i guided for a friend this year was WAY harder than packing out an elk. It actually did not compare.

I don't know how many will be available for NR's but there might be some extra tags available in WY this year due to some goat interaction with sheep and a herd that managers are trying to reduce in size.

Just going to throw this out there depending on the amount of time you have. Keep an eye out on the governors tags in each state. A couple years ago it went for less than 10k in Montana. It was a little steep for me but it had me scratching my head and doing the numbers. Seemed like a great buy and for some reason Mt. Goat?s seem to fly under the radar a bit.
Beautiful animals and amazing hunts.
Good luck.

Did you PM akavatior? On your guide selection in case you don't know about AK he was very well connected to the Alaska wildlife troopers!

Make sure you have a good rifle caliber and you can shoot it very well. If you don't quite put it where it needs to be, goats can go a long way in a short time. They are not real big but have a will to live like no other. If they go over the top, the pack out can be crazy.

What he said !!
They also have a will to screw with you once they realize they're about to die.
I got a goat in AK and even though I hit him in the shoulder/lungs, twice, with my 30-06 he turned and jumped off a cliff before he expired. It was a loooooooong way down !!
