I am looking for some advice on what units to apply for In Wyoming. My son would like to get an antelope and I don't want to wait 4 years to pull a permit in Nebraska. I am going into this cold so i need some advice. Thank you James

I suggest getting plugged into the Eastmans Members Research Section, MRS. Either by subscribing to the magazines, buying last years MRS book, or seeing if you can get a copy of the 2016 WY MRS. It may be available digitally, not sure. But, it contains a wealth of info. If you go the magazine subscription route, about 1/2 the MRS is in the Bow Mag, the rest in the Hunting Mag. Not sure what the schedule by Mag and state will be for 2017. There is also plenty of searchable info already on the forum. Good luck.

I live in Antelope Central (Casper, Wyoming). Either area 34 or 69 would be a good choice. Numerous good animals and plenty of public land. Draw odds for residents are good. No idea about non-residents. Hope this helps...

With zero points it is very difficult to draw any decent area. I grew up in Wyoming, have a lot of contacts and places to go, and still buy points. If you are willing to pay for ranch access, you have many options. Where in Nebraska do you live?

I agree with Hilltop. It will be difficult to have a decent public hunt with 0 points unless you are willing to pay a trespass fee. The special price license will open up a few possibilities for a public land hunt.

I'd buy a point to get a buck tag year after next and then get a bunch of doe tags for this year.

Make sure when you call landowners you tell them your son is coming for his first hunt, that might get you a better trespass fee deal or even better access. We love young hunters here in Wyoming, keep the spirit alive.

I've had many doors open when seeking access for one of my kids. Last time was for Moose in WY. I was talking to the state access coordinator for that area in WY, mentioned my son had the tag, and he went on and on about how they like to help parents with kids. Then I had to sheepilsly tell him he is full grown and 30 something, not a young new hunter, he said it did not matter. Thought that was a pretty nice gesture.

From my experience, any unit around Rawlins is good on public land but I think they are difficult to draw. We saw very very few antelope in the south east corner of the state and didn't fill tags there. Just apply every year and go. It's so worth. Just skin, quarter, and get it on ice asap. Delicious.

Was just studying areas/points needed a few days ago and point creep has definitely showed up to the antelope draws as well. Figured I'd have enough for the unit I want and now I'm 2 points behind.

Another option is hopping on the interweb/craigslist and looking for access. When my son was younger and had no points I used to pay a 200$ trespass fee and hunt a 640 acre square that was butted up against a bunch of public land. You looking for a buck hunt or doe to just get him shooting?
