first time hunt in wyoming

looking for some good info got a tag for deer in region A use to hunting the woods in northern Minnesota just sold a full time fishing resort on lake of the woods and want to enjoy some time in the country not on the water any help would be greatly appricated if u want to catch walleye iam hear. i am willing to hunt any where in region A

Did you do any research on this unit before you bought the tag?

I think you will get better responses if you show that you have done' some research and leg work on your end. This time of year people pop up all over the internet with nothing but a unit # and ask for help.

One other thing to check is the area around Cook Lake has a lot of closed roads because they are worried about landslides. It is a pretty popular area, but it might be closed still.

yes a little research didnt have much time for a lot of research do to a very busy resort but as I mentioned sold and now on to my second half of life hunting have shot number of elk and deer in Montana but land got sold so thought id try Wyoming I have 2 secitions of land on the powderhorn river have taken a few antelope but prefere to walk and hunt for deer have a short window to do a hunt have to be back in mn. to guide in mid nov.

Tom, I don't believe he is bitter but just being honest. Hundreds of guys ask questions like yours without much effort on their end. I understand your situation but have little to offer accept to put boot leather on the ground. I have hunted much of Wyoming but not your particular area. Generally the guys who do well are the ones that are willing to work at it- learn an area and be willing to hike a few miles to get away from the crowds. Sometimes going into the hunt blind is really fun. My best advice- Stop in a local bar and buy a guy a drink and you will likely get more advice than you want. Have fun with the experience... good luck.

Is private on option? It seems like I see the deer hanging out on the ranches on the way to the forest once they get a little pressure. At least that is where I seem to see them the most. . There are lots of places to go in that area with the NF. I like Hilltop's idea of going into a local bar. The area does get quite a few hunters, so Hilltop is right again, finding a place away from the crowds is probably a good idea. Hulette is a very hunter friendly town IMO, so I might start there if you go bar hopping and easy access to the NF. Its for sure an area that is worth spending some time in, though. Lots of cool places.

Bitter? no idea where you came up with that.

Every year this happens. Bunch of guys go on internet forums asking for info about a unit, many in their first post. Many who have done little to no legwork on their own. Many/most never contribute anything to the forums they are asking for help on.

I've noticed that those people who show that they have put some effort into researching their unit get better responses then the ones who simply throw out a unit number and ask for info. Thought it might help you get better responses.

Region A is known a lot more for it's whitetails and turkey hunting than for mulies. There is NF to hunt on and that's where you'll have to hunt with others like yourself because the bulk of the good land is private. I'm not surprised you got the answers you have after reading your initial post. None of us are bitter, but as they have stated, it gets old when people come on and ask a question like you have and are never heard from again. Guys that are on a site and are interactive from the getgo usually get the help they need when they get a tag because they are also helping others and not just asking for help. I hope you have a good time, and if nothing else region A is some neat country that is quite different from a lot of the rest of Wyoming. PS: It would also help if you started a sentence with a capital letter and used some periods to end sentences, as reading posts like yours is a pain in the wazoo!

I hunted this unit once, over 20 years ago, and was lucky enough to get invited along with some guys who had ranch access. I agree with Top Gun, this unit is more known for white tail and turkeys, but there are mulies there, and some darn nice white tails. It is a tough unit to hunt from an access prespective without pre-arranged ranch access. That being said I would strongly recommend a good GPS with a land owner chip, regardless of where you hunt in this unit. There is National Forest and some BLM land to hunt, as well as some State land along the Belle Fourche river. River bottoms usually mean white tails, but there are some really nice ones out there, so your choice.
We stayed in Alzada Montana on our trip out there, and there are several 'watering holes' in town where you may find help and advice. I recall several evenings when some of the local ranchers actually came to town looking for hunters so they could supplement their income with some pretty reasonable trespass fees. Again that was a while ago, so I can't speak to the current situation.
